Does God Exist?

“The fool has said in his heart,

‘There is no God.’

They are corrupt,

They have done abominable works,

There in none who does good.”                Ps. 14:1 & 53:1

There was a college professor who would begin his freshman seminary class with the statement, “God does not exist,” for dramatic effect. Before the perky theology students had time to call the dean, he would explain, “Because to say that God exists limits Him!” Who are we to even ascribe existence to God who spoke the universe into existence, as we know it, and knows all things, created all thing and sustains all things. By His grace, He has revealed Himself to us, with the overflow of His love, that we may know Him and reflect His glory.

Today, in order to sharpen our apologetics, we are going to examine some of the proofs of God’s existence. Not that it wins anyone. Man does not reject God for lack of evidence but because of the depravity of his heart men choose to reject the living God because there are consequences to this relationship, as there are in all relationships. But it is good for us to know that there is tangible evidence for the existence of God. We are called to walk by faith, but this faith is not entirely blind. There are moorings that we can cling to that often serve to buttress our fragile capacity to believe. Two million descendants of Jacob came out of Egypt and saw dramatic manifestations of God’s presence and power, but as Paul points out to the church in Corinth, “with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted.” I Co. 10:5,6

The first obvious proof is what we call general revelation. Everyone who has gazed up at those dots in the sky, stood at the base of a mountain, or traveled upon an ocean has witnessed evidence that drives them to consider the existence of something bigger than themselves; a divine creator. David did this and was moved to write a psalm, “The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.” Ps. 19:1. A little more poetic, the Psalmist writes elsewhere, “You who laid the foundations of the earth, So that it should not be moved forever, You covered it with the deep as with a garment; The waters stood above the mountains. At Your rebuke they fled; At the voice of Your thunder they hastened away.” Ps. 104:5-7.

In all fairness, this is not evidence of God, but only of a god. All religions of the world observe nature and draw some conclusions, often deifying nature itself. Even this is by design, as Solomon expressed, “Also, He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.” Ecc. 3:11. Paul gives even more clarity: “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” Rm. 1:18-21

There are also some logic-based proofs nestled in reality that everyone has to deal with if they choose to. Thomas Aquinas (1225 -1274) borrowed from Aristotle’s “First Mover”: Everything in the universe, he said, is in motion, and it is in motion because it is moved upon by something, which must bring us back to the first mover, who started everything in motion, and Himself is immovable.

Another truth that is perplexing for the atheist is the existence of a moral law. Everyone will agree that there is a moral law, though not everyone will agree on the details, but the existence of a sense of right and wrong is perplexing. This posits the existence of a moral law-giver who is above and outside the framework of the law. Consider the weight of Jesus’ statement, “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets, I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.” Mt. 5:17. Psalm 19:7 emphasizes, “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul;

The fine-tuning of the universe is another logical proof. I’ve included a link to the math behind the golden ratio rectangle; a series of geometric orders that project perfectly into the earth to moon size ratio.

AMAZING! I geek out over this stuff. The perfection of all the other cosmic elements necessary to sustain life also makes a very strong argument for creation. Life itself, which yet baffles science, is another perfect mystery that eventually finds its way to, “Let Us create man in Our image, according to Our likeness.” Gen. 1:26. Furthermore, man is even more perplexing because of our capacity for abstract thought and fervent love.

Time is another mystery, and this leads us to the wonder of fulfilled prophecy, which the Judeo-Christian Scriptures are rich in.  Now we are narrowing the lens to reveal the one true God, for who can see forward accurately into time. I included a link that demonstrated the accuracy of the speed of light nestled in Scriptures. The tribe of Judah was positioned at the point of the rising sun. The Jews were called the children of light. Numbers 2:9 numbers the tribe of Judah at 186,400.

Paul also commands us to “Walk as children of light.” Eph. 5:9. In the mid 19th cen. a British mathematician, Sir Robert Anderson, calculated with great accuracy the Daniel 9 prophecy concerning the “Coming Prince” and the “Seventy Weeks,” to what we call Holy Week, and Jesus Passion. Concerning Jesus, we also observe that there are over three hundred Old Testament prophecies that play out with astonishing accuracy in the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

To me, one of the most amazing realities of modern times, which points to the transcendent truth of the Scriptures, is the existence of the nation of Israel. Despite many attempts by men and nations to erase the Jewish people from the face of the earth, they maintained a cultural and religious identity for over fifteen hundred years without a homeland, and have, in recent years, taken back the territory that God promised to Abraham back in Genesis:
I will always keep the promise I have made to you and your descendants, because I am your God and their God. I will give you and them the land in which you are now a foreigner. I will give the whole land of Canaan to your family forever, and I will be their God.” Gen 17:7,8 (CEV).

Jesus is the perfect revelation of God the Father. He came and dwelt among us, lived a sinless life, spoke wisdom from another world, demonstrated authority over the natural world that He created by: walking on water, healing sick people, raising the dead, passing through locked doors, reading peoples minds, rising from the dead and floating into heaven, all in front of many witnesses and recorded from multiple perspectives. What more proof does one need? Well apparently, somehow, more.

The renowned atheist Bertrand Russell said that when he dies, if there is a God, he will say, “Not enough evidence.” He died in 1970. I wonder how that went for him. The truth is, I’ve never seen a true atheist because we all worship something because we are created to do so. The obstacle to the gospel is never evidence; it’s always moral and/or demonic activity. Ever notice that no matter how much evidence and logical consistency you offer people, you still can’t penetrate their hard hearts? That should tell us something.

Ps. 53:3 goes on to say, “There is none who does good,

                                      No, not one.”

World history is certainly evidence of that. All the more evidence of our desperate need for a savior. He has come and invites us in!
