Good morning,
Today’s photo of a blazing afternoon sun shining its light over the farmlands and trees on the left side of “Freedom Road” comes to us from yours truly as I captured this late spring scene back on June 15, 2024.
Well, it’s Friday, thank God, and as I look forward to the end of another work week at 5 pm, I am thankful for the work that the Lord is doing in my life in the area of repentance and the conviction of sin.
While we all can agree with the Biblical concepts that tell us that “sin is sin”, and some things can be sinful to some while it isn’t sinful for others, when it comes to our personal sins, we tend to minimize or categorize our sins to make them easier to live it. In my struggles with food addiction, I know that, for me, eating certain foods or overeating is “sin” – when I indulge in my flesh, I feel guilt and shame that informs my heart (and body, for that matter) that I am missing the mark of the life that God wants for me. Some recent failures in this area of my life has revealed that my food addiction driven behaviors result in the violation of the eighth and ninth commandments – Thou shalt not steal – because I take food on the sly that doesn’t belong to me or that I have permission to eat – & thou shall not lie, or bear false witness – as I am not forth right with the truth of my eating behavior all the time – committing a lie of omission until I am discovered or feel the need to confess, which I feel today.
Before I get to that, I wanted to highlight how lying puts us in league with Satan. The Turning Point with Dr. David Jeremiah devotion for today talks about the Devil’s native language, and I am sharing it on the blog today to encourage us to speak the truth, as Christians should. David Jeremiah writes:
“THE DEVIL’S NATIVE LANGUAGE
You belong to your father, the devil … He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar, and the father of lies. – John 8:44, NIV
It is estimated that there are more than seven thousand languages in use today. Among all of these languages there is one named language you will not find: Liar.
Yet Jesus identified Liar as the language native to Satan. Some modern English translations of Jesus’ words say that lies are consistent with Satan’s character or his nature. The New International Version says that lies are his “native language”—the language with which a person is most comfortable and conversant; perhaps the language they grew up speaking and use most often. When it comes to Satan, Jesus said that he has been a murderer and a liar “from the beginning,” probably referring to the Garden of Eden. He lied to Adam and Eve about God’s instructions because “there is no truth in him.”
If you find yourself denying or doubting the Word of God, consider where those thoughts may be coming from.” – David Jeremiah
There is no form of sin in which we act more satanically than when we indulge in telling a lie. – Frank Gaebelein
Amen. As a Christian Life Coach and teacher of discipleship classes, I have often said that the first “rule of discipleship” is to “stop lying.” Tell the truth in all your dealings with- be transparent”.
This is the “first rule” because when we lie, we are most like the devil, when we tell the truth, we are most like Jesus. If we want freedom in Christ, we have to tell the truth and be free of their fear of being found out.
Ironically, I am extremely convicted about telling the truth this morning because of some recent failures in the area of my food addiction, which has made me like Satan, a thief, and a liar. So I confess! On occasion, I have taken food that I didn’t have express permission to eat – at work, at church, and in my home.
My food addiction at times has caused me to be on a “see food diet” – I see food and eat it – often without express permission. While I could rationalize away my crimes of food thievery, today I am confessing it publicly so I can expose it to the light of truth so I can truly repent of the behavior and be free of the bondage to just take and eat things that aren’t mine – having to live with the shame of binge eating /sneak eating behavior and fearing negative consequences should my food theft be found out.
Food theft or sneaking food is the food addict’s shame. It is my prayer to confess, renounce this behavior, and be free of it, so I pray:
Lord,
My crimes, sins, and victims of food theft are too numerous to count, and while I couldn’t hope to repay all that I have taken, I am truly sorry for what I have done and ask for Your forgiveness.
I confess all instances of my food theft that took place before this morning and renounce that behavior, and all the lies that are involved with it. Going forward, I commit myself to not taking, or eating, any food that is not purchased by me or that I have not been given express permission to consume. I also cancel any ground the enemy may have in my life because of the sin of food theft and the lies that surround that behavior.
In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
Hey – this confession might be embarrassing, but I know the importance of living in harmony with the Lord and being free of the bondages of sin. I know that the only way to freedom and peace is through the truth.
My food theft caused me to be deceived by a whole host of lies and rationalizations, and it is my hope that telling the truth about this will lead me into further repentance and freedom. I invite anyone else who has this secret sin to use my prayer for yourself to draw closer to God and to resist the devil.
