Revival to Judgment
“And yet if I do judge,
My judgment is true, for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me.”
Jn. 8:16
For the past few weeks
we have been looking at the subject of revival. Loosely defined, it is an outpouring
of God’s Holy Spirit in space and time. God’s transcendence becomes eminent.
As much as we may try to
figure out, conjure up, imitate, or out right fake, this manifestation, the
truth is that it is a sovereign act of God for His glory and purpose.
When we find ourselves
in a personal, social, or ecclesiastical state of apostasy, we hope for
revival; that God would swoop in and reveal Himself in such a powerful way that
it genuinely grips our hearts.
But He also has another method
We see evidence in
Scripture that when a person, or a people drift so far from the ways of
Godliness that God is compelled to exercise His justice in the form of
temporary judgment.
What is judgment?
The Hebrew word “sepet” means: a sentence, i. e. infliction.
In the above verse, the Greek word, “krisis” means:
decision, (subjectively or
objectively, for or against); by extension, a tribunal;
by implication, justice (especially, divine law); – accusation, condemnation, damnation, judgment.
In common vernacular we think of it as a decision, based on reliable evidence in legal matters or in
everyday life.
When God executes
judgment, He makes a decision to impose consequences to bring about alteration
in trajectory.
Pr. Finn use to say,
“People don’t change because they see the light, they change because they feel
the heat.
In Gen. 3, God judges
sin, but extends mercy by making a covering.
In Gen. 6-9, God judges
mankind, but rescues Noah and his household
as a remnant.
In Exo. God judges Egypt
by making a mockery of their pagan gods,
and rescues Israel from their oppression.
In I Sam. 28:18, Samuel
rebukes King Saul, “Because you did not obey
the voice of the LORD nor execute His fierce wrath upon Amalek.”
In the minor Prophets
God judges the nations, see Zeph. 1:4-15
God judges Israel in II
Kings 17:5:18 and Judah in II K. 23:3
Did God just execute
judgment in the OT?
Let’s ask Ananias and
Sapphira.
Where there is plurality
of miracles there is plurality of judgment.
“to whom much is given,
from him much will be required” Lk.12:48
The question for our
times is, will God send revival or judgment?
Have we slipped into
Rom. 1:28, “so God have them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what
ought not tho be done.”?
We know that the “falling
away” must occur first before the coming of, “that Day” II Thes. 2:3
How should we respond:
Read II Pet. 3:1-18
“be mindful” vr. 2
“do not forget: vr. 8
look for the “hastening”
vr. 12
embrace His “promise”
vr. 13
“be diligent” vr. 14
“consider” the
“longsuffering of our Lord” vr. 15
“beware lest you also
fall” vr. 17
“grow in the grace and
knowledge” vr. 18
“To Him be the glory
both now and forever. Amen.”
