You Can’t Get There From There
“His divine power has given
to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of
Him who called us by glory and virtue.” II Pet. 1:3
This is our starting point.
In contrast to all other
religious forms in the world, we start at the place that everyone else is
trying to get to.
However you wish to frame it;
“born again,” Jn. 3:3 “received Christ,” Col.
2:6 “calls on the name of the Lord.” Act.
2:21 you were ushered into the family of God
through regeneration. Tit 3:5. “Your sins
are forgiven”; I Jn. 2:12; hidden by the
blood of Jesus, I Jn, 1:7 never to be
remembered again. Isa. 43:25 You stand
righteous before Holy God. II Cor 5:21
and welcomed into His presence. Heb. 4:16
We were “grafted in”
according to Rom. 11:17-24
The difficulty arises when
we, as believers, seek to find right standing with God after being accepted.
See Eph. 1:6
You can’t get to the place
where you already are.
The only place left to go is
back to where you were before.
This is similar to Satan offer Eve what
she already possessed Gen 3:5
The children of Israel
murmured and complained about this to Moses saying things like, “were there no
graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness?” Ex. 14:11
Once in Christ we may grow in
areas like, maturity, knowledge of God, obedience, love of God, love to the
saints, but we haven’t changed position. Our relationship with God is
positional.
Finish reading II Pet. 1:4-11
with emphasis on verse. 9
Peter invokes the notion of
“promises” verse. 4 knowing that God
keeps His promises. And the assurance that we, “may be partakers in the divine
nature”
In verse. 5-7 Peter supplies
us with a partial list of virtues.
In verse. 8 I believe that it
is appropriate to say that the word “if” can be translated “since” in the same
way we understand Rom 8:31, “If God is for us, who can be against us”…God is
for us!
But it goes on to speak of
fruitfulness; something we all long for in our walk with the Lord. Not
acceptance. We already have that; but fruitfulness.
Remember Jn. 15:8 “By this My
Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit…” Our fruit is for His glory!
In verse. 9 Peter returns to
the original thought by saying that, if you haven’t been growing in these other
things, it’s probable that you have, “forgotten that (you) he was cleansed from
his old sins.”
We might rephrase, You have
forgotten that you have been given everything pertaining to life and godliness.
The remedy is to, “be even
more diligent”, because if you are you will, “never stumble” verse. 10
Who wants to stumble???
Verse. 11 is open for
discussion 🙂
