The Righteousness of God
“Shall not the Judge of
all the earth do right?” Gen. 18:25
The righteousness of God is a matter that, I believe, we
take for granted. The notion and understanding that He is right in all that He
does is beyond us because we are constantly mingling unrighteousness into all
that we do. Isaiah says, “But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our
righteousnesses are like filthy rags;” Isa. 64:6. Because of this, we as
believers will even question the righteousness of God at times, especially in
regards to situations that we don’t understand or disagree with.
It is important for us to identify the elements of this
problem so that we my be in agreement with God, for, “Can two walk together,
unless they agreed?” Amos 3:3
To help us understand it’s
always a good idea to go back to the breach, as I like to call it.
In Gen. 3 we notice two
things regarding this subject.
1) The temptation that Satan
brings before Eve is to disagree with God.
He is challenging God’s righteousness with an opinion – better stated, a lie – posing that God in not only wrong but also devious. Consider how many times we
wrestle with the same notions.
2) By eating of the tree of
the knowledge of good and evil, we are cast
into a state of always having to debate what is right on our own without even Satan’s temptation.
We see in our culture today and
throughout history, the magnitude that this debate
takes on, and the divisiveness that ensues from it.
For this reason God has given
us His word, as a guide, but we even debate His word with doubt and
interpretation.
In our opening portion of Scripture, Abraham is cautiously
debating with God over the righteousness of destroying Sodom and Gomorrah.
Doubtless here Abraham remembers the account of the flood, and rightly fears
the wrath of God. Little does Abraham know that there is not even one righteous
on the whole face of the earth, and the only reason that God is speaking with
him is because of His sovereign choice. Ps. 14:2,3 “The LORD looks
down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there are any who
understand, who seek God, The have all turned aside, they have together become
corrupt; there is none who does good, No, not one.” Because of God’s mercy He only destroys Sodom
and Gomorrah.
Paul quotes Isaiah, in Rom.
9:29, “Unless the LORD of
Sabaoth had left us a seed, We would have become like Sodom, And we would have
been made like Gomorrah.
The seed are the children of
Abraham; not of the flesh, but those who walk in the faith of Abraham,
Rom 4:13. It is one matter to believe in God; James says, “Even the demons
believe – and tremble!” But it is yet another matter to believe God; to
take Him at His word.
Therefore, “the Word
became flesh and dwelt among us.” Jn. 1:14
Jesus confounded the order of
Ps. 14 because there was no debate in Him. Jn. 5:19, “Most assuredly, I say
to you, the son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for
whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.” Phil. 2:8 says that
obedience was, “to the point of death, even death on a cross.” Because
of that atoning death, we have peace with God, and debate is no longer
necessary. We may debate over matters that we don’t understand, but it is like
being declared not guilty by a judge, and then arguing with him after. What’s
the point?
In the cross, God’s
righteousness and mercy are on full display.
He does what is right. There is no debate about His love!
