Why I don’t Share the Gospel

“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on
earth. Go therfore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to
observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always,
even to the end of the age.” Amen
.
Mt. 28:18-20

This is called, in church
circles, “The Great Commission.” It is Jesus invocation to the church through
out the ages to proclaim the gospel because; Rom. 10:14, “How then shall
they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in
Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?”

It is God’s design that the
gospel would be conveyed through us. It is not our commission to convince
anyone because that poses an immediate deficiency. There is nothing
supernatural in our power to convince. Salvation is a supernatural dynamic.

However, II Cor. 5:20 says, “Now
then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we
implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.”

So, why don’t we do it?

Let’s explore the reasons and
debunk them with Scripture.

1) We don’t know enough.

Anyone listening to this podcast already knows enough to
share the gospel. Most of the church today is over taught. We are sermon
junkies. We have already expressed that it is not our power to convince anyway,
but the Spirit giving the increase. We do our small part and watch the Spirit
do the rest.

2) I don’t have the gift of
evangelism.

Though there is an office of “evangelist” in Eps. 4:12, this
is different from the general calling of all disciples to make disciples.

3) I have a terrible track
record and have never won anyone to Christ.

Just to reinforce the earlier
statement, it’s not about us and our power to convince anyway. The prophet
Jeremiah is our example in this. He preached from the time of his calling until
his death without a single recorded conversion. He was simply obedient to his
commission.

4) I’m wrestling with my own
sin and feel disqualified.

         Now we’re getting somewhere.

Though I don’t wish to
trivialize sin and it’s power, but it is easily dealt with for the believer;
confess, ask for forgiveness, receive it and repent. I Jn. 1:9 is our go to on
this matter. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us
our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

5) I question the work of the
gospel in my own life.

The core work of the gospel is received and embraced by
faith. The evidence is at the cross. It’s not based upon our circumstances or
any natural evidence but upon the supernatural work of Christ on the cross, and
then magnified by the resurrection. Our faith in Christ is not some sort of
good luck charm that permanently casts us into favorable circumstances. Our
obedience to the commandment is the only matter. If we disobey, that compounds
our ineffectiveness with reason 4.

The
great commission is God’s masterful plan for reaching the world with the
gospel. Each one of us walks in a very particular sphere of influence,
strategically placed there by God. See Ep. 2:10

We
get to co-labor with God to reach the lost. It is both a joy and a privilege,
and yet we don’t own the results. We are simply the messengers trusting God to
bring the increase; see I Cor. 3:6
