Names of God
“The name of the LORD is a
strong tower;
The righteous run to it
and are safe.” Pro. 18:10
Since no one has named God He is known to us by His
attributes and the way He has revealed Himself to us.
Yahweh is how God revealed Himself to Moses in Ex. 3:14 at
the “burning bush” It is a loose translation of “To Be”, or “I AM”. He is the
eternal, personal, first-causal, self-existent One. The name is rightly spelled
by using four Hebrew letters, YHWH (YOD,
HE, WAW, HE) Pronunciation is uncertain
at best. We insert the vowels.
The Criswell Study Bible, Dr.
W.A. Criswell comments:
“God exists in a way
that no one or anything else does. His [supreme]
nature is implied by His ever-present existence without beginning or ending. He
is the only God who exists, and all other existence is dependent upon His
uncaused existence.”
He is also called, in
Scripture:
Elohim – The LORD is God, reflecting
divine majesty and power. Scholars often call it the “plural of majesty” referring
to Gen. 1:26. Scripture sometimes uses “elohim” to refer to any number of pagan
gods.
Elyon– The LORD
Most High, (lofty) Gen. 14:19-20
It’s used about forty times
in the OT. Literally means, “supreme God” or “most loved God.”
El-Shaddai – The LORD Almighty God. “El” is the singular form of Elohim,
and “Shaddai” is literally “sufficient” or “self-sufficient.” Gen. 17:1-3 El-Shaddai emphasized God’s
ability to handle any situation that confronts His people.
Adonai means “master” or “Lord,” showing God has
sovereignty over us. Jews were afraid of taking God’s name in vain, so they
would not pronounce it. When reading Scripture aloud, they replaced YHWH with
Adonai. Adonai gives us more of a hint about what the Lord’s role is on our
lives. See Gen. 19:2
The Lord of Sabaoth:
speaks of God’s armies; a military epithet of God. It shows up in the NT in Js.
5:4. in the OT it typically reads “The LORD of hosts” as in Isa. 1:24, “Therefore the Lord
says, The LORD of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel, ‘Ah, I will rid
Myself of My adversaries.’”
Jehovah Jireh – The LORD will provide, Gen. 22:14;
this is Abraham finding a ram in the thicket to sacrifice.
Tsidqenu – our Righteousness, Jer. 23:6 In Acts 3:14, Peter is preaching, and
says “You denied the Holy and Righteous One and
asked to have a murderer released to you.” CSB
Nissi – The LORD is my banner. Ex. 17:15 and speaks of the Lord as
conqueror, in this case, over the Amalekites. Sng. 2:4, “And his banner over
me was love.”
Shalom – The LORD is peace, Jdg. 6:24.
This is Gideon, who thinks he is going to die because he has seen “the
Angel of the LORD face to face.”
But the LORD assures him, “’do not fear, you shall not die.’ So
Gedeon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it The-LORD-Is-Peace.’”
Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you…” Jn. 14:27
Shamah – The LORD is there, from Eze. 48:35, “and the name of the
city from that day shall be: THE LORD IS THERE.”
Ropheka – The LORD is your healer Ex.
15:26, where God makes the bitter waters sweet in the wilderness.
Rohi – The LORD is my Shepherd, Ps. 23:1. This is both a name of God
and an affirmation of faith. Jesus, in one of His seven, “I AM” statements,
say, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.”
Jn. 10:11
So when you are born
physically you get a name. As you go through life you may get some additional
names, or labels. When you are born
again, spiritually you get a new name, or names, as if God bases upon your
changed self what He will call you. This new identity will come with a new set
of attributes. Rev. 2:17, “To him who overcomes I will give…a new name…”
If you read all of Scripture
you would begin to get an idea of what God thinks of you and how much He loves
you, but I will give a few examples:
Jn. 15:15, he calls you
“friend” “No longer do I call you servants… but
I have called you friends”
I Thes. 1:4, He calls us
chosen, “For we know, brothers and sisters loved
by God, that He has chosen you,” NIV
Eph. 2:10, His masterpiece,
art, handiwork, “For we are His workmanship,
created by Christ Jesus for good works.”
I Cor. 6:19, the temple of
the Holy Spirit. “Or do you not know that
your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 1:8, His messenger to
the world; “But you shall receive power when
the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be witnesses to Me…to the end of the earth.
Gal. 3:26, His child; “For
you are called sons of God through faith in
Christ Jesus.”
Rom. 5:8, greatly loved; “For
God demonstrates His own love toward us,
in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
II Cor. 5:17, brand new;
“There for, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new
creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
Jn. 8:36, free; “Therefore if
the Son makes you free, you shall be free
indeed.”
