The Compassion of Christ
“Then Jesus, moved with
compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said, to him, ‘I am willing; be cleansed’” Mk. 1:41
Years ago I did an exercise
to ask yourself, what are the qualities of Jesus that you are most drawn to;
His strength and authority, His power, His ability to confound the Pharisees,
His prayer life. This simple exercise would most likely tell you a lot about
you and your own giftings.
A person’s gifting stirs from
within. What Tom Griffith called “heart passion,” but it is also recognized
from without; perhaps by a prophetic word, or a mentor recognizing a quality in
you and coming alongside to groom it.
Today we are going to
consider the compassion of Jesus and the various implications of that. I think
this was His highest quality.
Jesus being fully God
possessed the character of God. The Old Testament, particularly the Psalms
speak of the character of God as having compassion on His creation.
Ps. 78:38 “But He, being full
of compassion, forgave their iniquity.
And did not destroy them.”
Ps. 86:15 “But You, O Lord,
are a God full of compassion…”
Ps. 90:13 “Return, O LORD!
How long?
And
have compassion on Your servants.”
Isa. 49:15 “Can a woman
forget her nursing child,
And not have compassion on the son of her womb?”
The Greek version of this
word, as used in our opening verse is “splagchnizomai” and means, “to have the
bowels yearn”
God would have to have bowels
in order for them to yearn and in the person of Jesus Christ, He did.
When God became man, Emanuel,
God with us, He took on every dimension of that experience.
Heb. 5:1,2 speaks of the
“high priest taken from among men” as having “compassion on those who are
ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness.”
But Ph. 2:7 tells us that
Jesus, “made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and
coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He
humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even thedeath of the
cross.”
Heb. 8:1 continuing on the
subject of the high priestly anointing says, “we have such a High Priest.”
Ken Blue writes in Authority
to Heal, saying that Jesus didn’t do miracles, heal the sick, and cast out
demons in order to endorse His ministry as many Evangelicals believe and
preach. He wasn’t trying to make a name for Himself and often told the people
He healed not to say anything. He healed the sick, cast out demons and raised
the dead out of compassion.
And this should be our
impetus also.
Compassion for one another in
our fallen, broken condition, especially since we share the same frailty.
Mt. 14:14, “and when Jesus
went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them,
and healed their sick.”
As we engage the commission
of Mt. 10:8 which Jesus gave to the twelve, “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers,
raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.” in
these last days when God promised to “pour out His Spirit on all flesh” we
likewise should walk in compassion, especially now where it is keenly needed.
As brokenness seems to prevail.
