Mourning Our Losses and Finding Healing – Purity 1651

Purity 1651 on YouTube:

Good morning

Today’s photo of Samuel Colman’s “Untitled: Ausable River (1869)” painting displaying a fisherman amongst the massive boulders and rock walls as the sun lights up the Adirondak Fauna and  mist of the surround waterfalls comes to us from yours truly as a chaptered this work of art while visiting the Adirondack Experience, the Museum on Blue Mountain Lake back on August 9th, 2023.

Well, it’s Tuesday and even though, as the caption of this painting pointed out, sometimes the largeness of the world surrounding us can make us feel insignificant and that the drama of our lives don’t matter in the grand scheme of things, I’m here to tell you that kind of talk is straight from the pit of Hell because God knows us personally, loves us deeply, so much so in fact that He sent His one and only Son to die for us so that we could live. God is close to us no matter what our station is in life and He not only cares about the days of our lives, He wants us to be healed of the traumas and pains of the past.

This past weekend my pastor, Roscoe Lily, shared a message entitled “Blessed Are Those Who Mourn”  in which he encouraged us to ask the question: “What loss haven’t I mourned yet?” and provided a guideline to use to go to the Lord in prayer to receive healing. It was bold message with practical tips on how to resolve traumas of the past and it visibly had an impact on several people in the congregation of the service I attended.  There is a link to Pastor Lily’s message (“Blessed Are Those Who Mourn” )  on the blog today and if the his question about an un-mourned loss stirs something in you, I encourage you to check it out.

The message’s impact was working in the heart of one of my friends from church yesterday as they sent me a text asking: “How do I mourn my past without condemning myself?”

As someone who has gotten over (or through) a lot of losses in life and since coming to Christ, and as someone who has dealt with the demonic oppression of “low self-esteem” and negative self-talk (a.k.a. condemnation), I offered the following short response:

“Accept God’s forgiveness. If He can forgive you, you need to forgive yourself.

We can’t fix the mistakes of the past. All we can do is:

  • Accept God’s love and forgiveness.
  • Mourn the losses and the mistakes we have made.
  • Learn from them.
  • Commit ourselves to God’s way.
  • And move forward in peace and joy.

While my somewhat pithy response, I believe, is pointing us to the pathway that leads to peace and abundant living, I wish to reiterate the importance of “point # 2” – to mourn the losses and the mistake of the past.

We don’t move forward in freedom and victory without resolving our personal and spiritual conflicts.  Besides Pastor Roscoe’s message (“Blessed Are Those Who Mourn” ), there are many other good resources out there for processing our grief, healing our emotional pain, and prayerfully repenting to God, such as:

The Steps to Freedom in Christ by Dr. Neil Anderson.

The Complete Guide to Crisis & Trauma Counseling by Dr. H. Norman Wright.

Wild at Heart (for Men) & Captivating (for Women) by John Eldredge.

Part of our walk as disciples of Jesus Christ should include receiving  the healing that He has to give us.  Jesus is still do miracles today through repentance and healing prayer and all we have to do to receive it is to come to Him and ask.

So if you have losses that you haven’t mourned, such as:

  • The death of a loved one,
  • The loss of a relationship (end of marriage, friendship, etc)
  • The loss of community (home, neighborhood, or community ties)
  • The loss of a job or career change
  • Financial or material losses (money, objects, places)
  • Loss of health or functioning (diagnosis of chronic or terminal disease)
  • Fertility, abortion, or miscarriage losses
  • Loss of cherished dreams
  • Loss of identity – where a loss impacts your sense of self

Feel the pain of your loss, go to the Lord in prayer, and receive His comfort, love, and healing.

Today’s Bible verse comes to us from “The Quick Scripture Reference for Counseling” By John G. Kruis.

This morning’s meditation verses come from the section on Marriage, Husband/Wife Relationships.

Ephesians 5:25,32 (ESV) Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, … This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church

Today’s verses fall under the eleventh point of our counseling reference guide resource section on Marriage, Husband/Wife Relationships.

11. Both husband and wife must seek to reflect the relationship between Christ and his church.

Today’s Bible verses show us that marriage is supposed to reflect the love of Christ for His people.

One of the best questions we can ask the Lord about our walk through life, in marriage or otherwise, is “How do I do this?” or “What am I supposed to do?”  We need God’s wisdom for living and when we seek it in His word there is no end to the practical wisdom that God gives us to apply to our lives.

How are husbands supposed to love their wives, and vice versa? We are to love one another like Jesus loved the church.   How is that? Well, Jesus gave of Himself, even to the point of death. He was generous, kind, and caring. He served people even if they didn’t necessarily deserved it or placed their faith in Him.

So when we love our spouses, we should reflect God’s love in our words and actions, and we should do so very clearly, meaning we openly speak about and pray to God in the process.  When we put God in the middle of our marriage, and keep referring and talking to Him, His Holy Spirit will guide us to be more and more like Jesus.

So ask God how to love like Jesus did and listen and obey to His response.

Day 150

If this man were a prophet he would have known who … this woman is. – Luke 7:39

The reasoning was correct, but the premise was wrong. The pharisee thought, wrongly, that a true prophet would have nothing to do with a sinful woman like her. Jesus did know who and what she was. And that is precisely why He did associate with her; He had come to seek and to save that which was lost—and she was a prime example of His saving work. This woman, saved, cleansed of her sins, was now a righteous person; the Pharisees were still in their sins, and were grossly unrighteous. He knew who they were, too! How thankful you should be that Jesus befriended sinners! He befriended you, though you were every bit as sinful as this woman. Thank Him daily. And, like your Lord, be ever willing to associate with sinners in order to win them to Christ. Indeed, that is one way to express your thanksgiving![1]
