Good morning,

Today’s photo of a rainbow over a rain covered highway and the greenery of it’s  surrounding foliage comes to us from an unknown FB friend who shared this magical scene on social media back on August 1st, 2024. If this over the rainbow memory is yours, let us know and we will photo credit you on the blog after the fact.

Well, it’s Saturday and even though I divide my time between my place “down by The River” and at my “countryside estate”, the simple fact is that, as Dorothy in the original Wizard of Oz film would tell you, there is no place like home.  And for me, even though I have great affection for my house in Stuyvesant and sometimes feel out of place in our rental in Easton, home is where my heart is and that place is wherever my wife TammyLyn happens to be.  TammyLyn is my best friend and the love of my life. Even though our relationship and marriage is relatively new, TammyLyn knows my heart and I know hers and when we come together the sense of love, peace, and joy we experience gives us the feeling that we have finally found what we were looking for all of our lives. In the love we have for each other, we have a home for our hearts.

Speaking of issues of the heart, this morning I started reading Mark DeJesus’ book, The Healing Heart Journey where He shared the following wisdom:

“Your Heart Needs Healing

Sometimes the most obvious things we need seem hidden, even though they are in plain sight. Most of the solutions for our life are very simple, yet often ignored. One of the greatest practices that is neglected is the need to cultivate and care for the life of the heart.

Sin has definitely infected our hearts with various forms of brokenness. But the fact that we overlook the issues of the heart, keep us in a shallow lifestyle, without depth in our transformational experiences.

We are broken people living in a broken world, attempting to live meaningful lives. But we are often so unaware of how our brokenness affects us. In addition, we’re so scared of letting our vulnerabilities show. Life and the enemy have trained us to hide our brokenness at all costs. Meanwhile, the brokenness is festering and having a relational impact.

Can we all just admit that each of us have various areas of brokenness in our lives? IF we can get honest that we are all broken to some degree, then we would have a lot more effective conversations and experience more authentic transformation.” – Mark DeJesus

Amen. The reason why my wife TammyLyn and I have found a “heart home” in one another is due to the fact that early on in our relationship we were willing to admit to the brokenness in our lives and were honest in sharing the details of our past with one another so there would be no secrets between us or any unexpected surprises if unexpected consequences from our pasts would affect our future together.  In our full disclosure to one another we were simultaneously able to receive healing through confession and were able to establish our relationship with honesty and trust.

Through our allowing ourselves to be vulnerable to each other, we were able to form a bond between us that is based on faith, love, and truth and it has set the foundation for our marriage and lives together. That foundation has helped us to navigate the various trials and transitions in our lives during our short time together with humility, grace, and love.  God is at the center of our marriage, and it is through our willingness to love one another as He has called us to, that has He has given us rest for our souls and a new heart home to live in.

Today’s Bible verse comes to us from “The Quick Scripture Reference for Counseling” By John G. Kruis.

(While Bible verses on various topics of Counseling can be found with a quick Google search, we encourage you to purchase this resource to support the late author’s work. (The Quick Scripture Reference for Counseling  By John G. Kruis on Amazon )

This morning’s meditation verses come from the section on Obedience – Keeping the Commandments.

Psalm 19:7- 14 (ESV) 7 The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; 8 the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; 9 the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold;                  sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. 11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. 12 Who can discern his errors?       Declare me innocent from hidden faults. 13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless,       and innocent of great transgression. 14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

Today’s verses are the second of three passages of scriptures that fall under the tenth point of our counseling reference guide resource section on Obedience – Keeping the Commandments.

10. God’s blessing and favor rest on those who obey him; obedience is the way to joy and peace.

Today’s Bible verses impress upon us the great wisdom of God’s instruction and its ability to give us peace by blessing our hearts.

The Bible isn’t just a bunch of fact to accumulate or rules to follow, it is filled with “heart wisdom” and the Maker of our souls has intended its wisdom to be absorbed and applied to the core of our lives. It is to be understood and applied to our lives through our hearts.

When we receive the truth of God’s word on a heart level, it is then that our souls can be revived, it is then that our hearts can rejoice, and it is then that we can be made wise, and it is then that our eyes can be enlightened.

So let me encourage you to emulate the psalmist in his obedient devotion to the Lord and allow His word to transform your life and enliven and heal your heart.

Day 183

The Pharisee was astonished to see that He didn’t wash first before dinner.

Luke 11:38

My mother used to insist on me washing before I ate—as a sanitary measure. After all, what is it that a young boy’s fingers could have been into beforehand? But this Pharisee’s astonishment had nothing to do with sanitation. He was offended by the fact that Jesus didn’t observe the man-made customs that had become almost a law for men like himself. Such hand washing had become an elaborate ritual for the Pharisees. But Jesus went on to draw a lesson from this incident, saying that Pharisees clean the outside of the cup (by rigidly following their outward rituals) but within the cup (their hearts) was “robbery and wickedness (v. 39).” He made the point that God looks at the heart; man looks at the outward appearance. God still looks at the heart. When he looks inside of you what does He see? The outer person may look good to others, but God sees both the outer and the inner person. And He wants both to be cleansed by faith.[1]
