Better is One Day!
“But the path of the just is like the shining sun,
That shines ever brighter unto the perfect day.” Prov. 4:18
I stumbled upon something, conceptually (thank you Holy Spirit) that seems to be woven into the warp and woof of God’s economy. It’s the principle of one day. I’m not going to elevate this to the status of cardinal truth because there are factors that will undermine this notion, but it is unusual how often Scripture places our being in the confines of today.
We categorize time in various matrixes. A year, for instance, is governed by the travels of the earth around the sun, which would have been unknown to ancient man. They would have most likely categorized a year by the return of certain seasons. This, I suspect, would have been a mystery to people groups living closer to the equator. The Jewish calendar is established on the cycles of the moon, which are more verifiable. It was carefully scrutinized by the rabbis to determine the start of a new month. In Ex. 12:1-2, The LORD established the first month for Moses and Aaron, which is Nissan (March – April) in which the Passover occurs. In the 4th century AD, the sage Hillel II foresaw the disbandment of the Sanhedrin and understood that we would no longer be able to follow a Sanhedrin-based calendar. So, Hillel and his rabbinical court established the perpetual calendar which is followed today.
The seven-day week is something of a mystery which gives way to many theories. Obviously, we ascribed to Gen. 1-2, which is good enough for me. But the length of a day is far more exact and determinative. It truly establishes your rhythm of life, divided between day and night, sleeping and waking.
I like to live life in very short increments which comes under criticism by planners and forward thinkers who endorse vision and prophecy; “Write the vision And make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it.” Hab. 2:2 and “Where there is no vision, the people perish” Pro. 29:18. So I won’t endorse my system.
Jesus said, at the end of a series of “do not worry”s, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
His kid brother James put forth a similar rule when he said, “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, by and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” Js. 4:13-15
Though we divide our lives into patterns of days and months and weeks and years, the only one of these that seem to have a measure of assurance is the day. Tomorrow I will wake up and, in some sense, start over again on my quest to honor and glorify God by endeavoring to hear His voice and keep His commands.
In The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard, Jesus tells of day laborers who receive their compensation at the end of a workday. That seems foreign to us in our economy. James goes on, in chapter 5, to say, “Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.” Js. 5:4
Are we really talking about unfair business practices here? I believe that we are talking about the rhythm of life. A day is a microcosm and is sometimes depicted as such in the more poetic verses of Scripture. We know that, for God, who lives outside of time, “one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” (II Pe. 3:8). He established days and even conformed Himself to this pattern during creation. We can monkey with the rest, but a day is established and begins with the joyful truth that, His mercies, “are new every morning;” Lam. 3:23
Judgment shall come in one day. Is. 9:14 says, “Therefore the LORD will cut off the head and tail from Israel, Palm branch and bulrush in one day.” And speaking of Babylon, Rev. 18:8 says, “Therefore her plagues will come in one day.” The Lord Jesus will return, and in one day, actually, “in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.” I Co. 15:52
“For He will finish the work and cut it short in righteousness, Because the LORD will make a short work upon the earth.” Rm. 9:28
Heb. 4:1-10, 1. Therefore, since a promise remains of entering
His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.
2. For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.
3. For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said:
“So I swore in My wrath,
They shall not enter My rest”
although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4. For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”
5. and again in this place: “They shall not enter My rest.”
6. Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience,
7. again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said:
“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.,”
9. For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day.
There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.
10. For he who has entered his rest has himself also ceased form his works as God did form His.
Today is the day of salvation for some and for some it is the day to enter eternity for all we have is today. Our lives are a series of todays, so, today, if you hear His voice, harden not your heart.
“Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you and evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; but exhort one another daily, while it is called ‘Today,’ lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.” Heb. 3:12,13
Eternity will be one very long day; one perfect day that we will not wish to end. Outside of time there is the present which is shorter than a day, but for the sake of wisdom we will call it today. After we have gathered up His mercies, in the morning, how will we steward them through this out the day?
Ps. 84 is a glimpse into eternity. The place we long for; the sabbath rest spoken of earlier; “sabbath” meaning: stop. It is about today.
How lovely is Your tabernacle, O LORD of hosts!
My soul longs, yes, even faints
For the courts of the LORD;
My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.
Even the sparrow has found a home,
And the swallow a nest for herself,
Where she may lay her young –
Even Your altars, o LORD of hosts,
My King and my God.
Blessed are those who dwell in Your house;
They will still be praising You.
Blessed is the man whose strength is in You,
Whose heart is set on pilgrimage.
As they pass through the Valley of Baca,
They make it a spring;
The rain also covers it with pools.
They go from strength to strength;
Each one appears before God in Zion.
O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer;
Give ear, O God of Jacob!
O God, behold our shield,
And look upon the face of Your anointed.
For a day I Your courts is better than a thousand.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
Than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
For the LORD God is a sun and shield;
The LORD will give grace and glory;
No good thing will He withhold
From those who walk uprightly.
O LORD of hosts,
Blessed is the man who trusts in You!
