Faith at Work and Our Generous Provider – Purity 1802

Good morning,

Today’s photo of the parking lot of the Verizon Schenectady Watt Street Garage as the sun rises on the horizon creating a pink and purple sky comes to us from yours truly as I captured this magic moment on the morning of February 12th, 2019.

Well, its’ Saturday and even though I have to admit that I love weekends off from work and the extended time off from work that I have been blessed with as I recover from the injury I suffered on the job,  I have to give thanks for all that the Lord has provided me with through the telecommunications job that I have had for the last 28 years.  Not only did the Lord use my job to support myself and my family financially during that time but He also used it as the environment to provide me with a whole lot of growth and spiritual maturity.  In 2010, I got saved while on my lunch hour in a company vehicle when I decided to mock a Christian radio message. In 2013, I got baptized at Hillsong Church NYC, while away from home on an out-of-town work assignment.  And it was also at my job where I can honestly say that I was persecuted for my faith and where I had to go through some of the darkest valleys of my life as I leaned on the Lord during my initial steps of recovery in 2015 and the heartache and devastation of divorce from 2018 to 2020.

Since being born again at work in 2010, I have often used some of my time there to pray, read the Bible, and to share the gospel.  Although I would hesitate to say that my job is my “mission field” because my efforts to do that would be considered futile compared to what I could or should be doing, I will begrudgingly admit that I practice my faith at work in small ways.

We spend over half of our waking hours on work- or work-related activities and it is estimated that one third of our lives are spent at work so if our faith life doesn’t follow us into our jobs, we are essentially cutting God out of our lives for a third of our lives! Let’s not do that.  God has provided us with our jobs as a means to meet our needs and to give us an opportunity to share and show His love let’s not waste it.

Speaking of God’s provision, the In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley devotion for from October 28th spoke on that topic, and the Lord called me to recall it this morning and share it on the blog today to show us just how much our Good Father provides for us. Dr. Charles Stanley writes:

“Our Generous Provider

Because the Lord has richly provided for us, we should respond generously to the needs of others.

Psalms 65:1-13

Have you ever considered how generousthe Lord is toward us? He created the earth and all it contains. He made the sun to both give light and help living things to thrive, and He sends rain to water the land and quench our thirst.

God’s abundant provision for physical needs should cause us to stand in awe of His love and care for us, but His generosity doesn’t end there. He has also provided for all our spiritual needs through His Son. By means of Jesus’ death on the cross, we are reconciled to the Father and given a wealth of blessings: His Word supplies guidance, His Spirit empowers us and transforms us into Christ’s image, and His church offers encouragement and support. Yet His generosity goes even further than this.

The Lord has also given us the promise of an inheritance in heaven (1 Peter 1:4). All that He’s prepared for us is beyond our human understanding, but Revelation 21:1-27 and Revelation 22:1-21 describe the new heaven and earth as a place of abundance and blessing.

Since the Lord has so richly provided for us, our first response should be gratitude, followed by generosity toward others. Based on His example, let’s tend to more than physical needs. We can also help spiritually by encouraging fellow believers and proclaiming the gospel to people who don’t yet know Jesus.” – Charles Stanley

Amen.  While I am now entering a season where I will be called to face a significant financial burden, the Lord is helping me to meet the need with a sense of peace because I can remember times in my past where the Lord has helped me in the past with His provision.

When we think of God’s provision for us, we have to recognize that, because God is the creator and sustainer of all things, God has provided us with literally everything we have and will ever have. There are no “self-made men” for the Lord has made us and given us all of our talents and abilities that we can harness to perform the work we do.  So everything we have “earned” in life essentially comes from God.  Whatever level of prosperity that we currently enjoy essentially comes from God’s goodness.  So if a need arises, selling everything we own to meet it would only be a matter of utilizing what God has provided us with.

Thankfully, although I have lost much in life and had to sacrifice a lot to be where I am today, even my greatest needs never required me to give of all that God provided me with.  So I can honestly say that God has given me more than enough to meet every physical need I have ever had in my life.  Please recognize that God has done the same for you.

But as much as meeting those physical needs is important, our spiritual need is greater and again it is only through God that we can have our spiritual needs to be met.

The parable of the man who sells everything he owns to buy a field that contains a great treasure guides us to understand the spiritual treasure that a relationship with God is.

Making peace with God through faith in Jesus and suffering the loss of whatever that choice will cost us is worth far more than all that “we possess”.

While our physical needs could be met in a variety of ways, there is only one way to meet our spiritual needs – faith in Jesus Christ.    If you know this and have put your faith in Jesus, rejoice because God has miraculously provided you with literally everything you need!

So, open your eyes, mind, and heart to see, understand, and to experience just how much God has provided you with.

If there comes a time where you will have to sacrifice some of what God has provided you with, remember that whatever you have to give up, it came from Him and He will be faithful to help you by providing for your needs in the future just like He has in the past, on earth and in heaven.

God is the great provider and in Christ He assures us of His great love for us and His faithfulness to help and provide for us all the days of our lives.

Today’s Bible verse comes to us from “The Quick Scripture Reference for Counseling” By John G. Kruis.

(While Bible verses on various topics of Counseling can be found with a quick Google search, we encourage you to purchase this resource to support the late author’s work. (The Quick Scripture Reference for Counseling  By John G. Kruis on Amazon )

This morning’s meditation verse comes from the section on Persecution.

Romans 12:14 (ESV) Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.

Today’s verse is the third of three passages of scripture that falls under the third point of our counseling reference guide resource section on Persecution.

3. Do good to and pray for those who persecute you. Love your enemies.

Today’s Bible verse puts it pretty clearly, bless those who persecute you, bless and do not curse them.

As I stated previously, I have suffered some mild persecution because of my faith.  I have been mocked and made fun of because I am vocal about being a follower of Jesus us. I have been rejected and have lost relationships because of my faith. The words said and things done against me hurt.  The pain of rejection and insult would naturally cause me to hate those who offended me. In the natural, I have contemplated enacting revenge on my enemies in the past.

But the Lord calls us to open our eyes to the higher realities of the world’s circumstances and to see things through His eyes and through His heart. God calls us to look at the end as well as the beginning to consider not only where someone may be coming from but to painfully consider where they will be going if they remain separated from God.  When thinking of the horror and terror of hell, we honestly wouldn’t wish it on our worst enemies.

So calls us to love our enemies, and to bless those who persecute us, to bless them and not curse them, in hopes that our kindness will cause them to search their hearts and hear the voice of God that is calling them to come home.

In Christ, we surrender our offences to God and forgive those who harm us, and we pray for those who persecute us because we recognize that we too were enemies to God but have received His love, mercy, and grace.  We bless those who persecute us in hopes that the Lord will use it to save them too,

Day 302

But Saul more and more was filled with power and confounded the Jews … – Acts 9:22

If I am not mistaken, there may be some who just read the entry for Day 301 and wondered why I was speaking against a cult from that passage. You may be one who likes to avoid controversy. But Paul was involved in it from the beginning of his ministry. The entire New Testament is filled with controversy. Jesus and Paul, Peter, Jude, John—you name him—every writer was involved in “confounding” the Jews, the pagans, the Gnostics, and so on. Most of us would like to avoid controversy, but that isn’t possible. Here, there is an important side point that may be made about a modern heresy that ought not to be missed. What is the passage teaching? That anyone who trusts Christ is saved and then ought to be admitted to baptism and church membership—a view opposite to that of the cult I have in mind. Modern Sauls must be welcomed without unbiblical impediments put in their way![1]
