When You Crash and Burn but Are Still Flying High – Purity 1813

Good morning,
Today’s photo of a gravel pathway leading out of the darkness of a metal tunnel to a bright Adirondack forest comes to us from yours truly as I captured this hopeful scene back on August 17th, 2024 during my visit to Severance Hill in Schroon Lake, NY.
Well, It’s Thursday, and speaking of severance, I got the very bad news that I was being severed from what is now my former career in telecommunications. A couple of days ago I shared that worst case scenario fear on the blog and while I don’t claim to be a seer or prophet it did come pass. My failure to utilize the proper safety equipment that resulted in my August fall and injury will be the last mistake that I make while on the job for my former employer. My union is going to fight the decision to fire me, of course, and I have even suggested that I be humbled with an office job as discipline, but I got the feeling in my spirit yesterday that this is indeed the end of my 28 year career. Maybe not, we will see.
As I stated the other day, it is times like these, where we fail to perform, where we make stupid mistake, and where we are shamed and rejected that it is VERY important to have our identity firmly planted on the truth of what God’s word says about us and on the sure hope of God’s faithfulness to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Some hopeful verses for the recently laid off, fired, or rejected among us included:
Romans 8:28 (NLT) And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
Proverbs 10:3 (NLT) The LORD will not let the godly go hungry, but he refuses to satisfy the craving of the wicked.
Psalm 37:25 (NLT) Once I was young, and now I am old. Yet I have never seen the godly abandoned or their children begging for bread.
Matthew 6:31-33 (NLT) 31 “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ 32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. 33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.
God has faithfully provided for my needs in the past and I believe He will faithfully provide for them in the future. Spoiler alert, God has perhaps has already provided for future needs as I immediately started applying for jobs yesterday and was hired for one that starts next Friday, which will actually be one day before I am officially dismissed from my former position.
While I don’t know if that job will lead to a new career or not, I can tell you that word is true. God does provide for those that are called according to His purpose and who are willing to work.
Like I said the job I was hired for may not be my final destination career wise. I will be looking more employment opportunities today and praying for the Lord to guide me to the job would please Him the most.
So even though I was fired yesterday, I don’t feel defeated. This latest calamity has just given me more reason to rely on the Lord and when I think about what He could do to move things together for my good, it gives me hope and the strength to carry on.
As Isaiah 40:31 says 31 But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. God will give me new strength for this new challenge and I will trust Him to direct my path.
Speaking of soaring high, the Turning Point with Dr. David Jeremiah devotion for today talks about flying high with the Lord and I am sharing it on the blog today to encourage us all to let Him be the wind beneath our wings.
“FLYING HIGH
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. – Hebrews 11:8
Earlier this year, a plane from Thailand was headed to London’s Heathrow, but a fire shut down the airport. London’s Gatwick airport was full. The pilot told the passengers honestly, “We don’t know where we’re going to go yet.” The aircraft finally landed in Brussels.
Sometimes we feel the Lord telling us, “Fasten your seat belts. I’m in control even though you don’t know where you’re going.” That happened to Abraham. God called him, not telling him where he was going, and Abraham obeyed.
We walk by faith, and the best advice for finding God’s will is still found in this simple formula: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Ask the Lord for strength to trust and courage to obey. He’s a true and faithful Pilot. – David Jeremiah
God in His love always wills what is best for us. In His wisdom He always knows what is best, and in His sovereignty He has the power to bring it about. – Anonymous
Amen. Before coming to Christ, we try to fly our own plane through life but if your story is anything like mine is, you make some really bad decisions, repeatedly, and eventually crash and burn. Sometimes more than once! And until we are ready, we keep trying to make it through the unfriendly skies of this world on our own, doing things our way, but never find peace.
But then the Lord calls you and invites you to fly with Him. He asks that you let go and let Him be the pilot of your life. Making the decision to let go and let God take the wheel, can feel like falling but if you take that leap of faith you’ll discover that the Lord is good and true to His word and when submit to Him, He will lift you up out of your brokenness to raise you to a whole new life of abiding peace and joy.
Hold on. Sometimes there will be storms and trials that will shake everything up but when you trust God to deliver you to your final destination, you can be sure that He will protect you and deliver you to a good place.

This morning’s meditation verses come from the section on Persecution.
1 Thessalonians 3:2–4 (ESV) We sent Timothy, our brother and God’s coworker in the gospel of Christ, to establish and exhort you in your faith, that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this. For when we were with you, we kept telling you beforehand that we were to suffer affliction, just as it has come to pass, and just as you know.
Today’s verses fall under the eleventh point of our counseling reference guide resource section on Persecution.
11. Do not be unsettled or let the devil lead you away from the faith through persecution.
Today’s Bible verses tell us how we can be certain that we will face afflictions when we live for the Lord. Paul says that afflictions are destined to us and apparently he repeatedly told his brothers in sisters in Christ that they were to suffer affliction too.
Did he do this to depress them? No he warned his brothers and sisters in Christ about the certainty of affliction, to remind them of the cost we have to pay for receiving the gift of God’s grace. Although God’s grace is a free gift, there are consequences for turning toward the light. And he warned them to prepare the new believers for the afflictions they would face so they wouldn’t lose hope.
When it seems like everything is stacked against you, you can remind yourself of how everything and everyone came together to persecute and kill Jesus. If Jesus suffered, we should not be surprised that we will suffer for following Him. But we should also never forget that the gift of an eternal life of peace and joy in the Lord’s presence is worth far more than anything we will suffer on earth.
So, remember that and endure the afflictions you face with patience, hope, and peace.

Day 312
David … served God’s purpose in his own generation. – Acts 13:36
God has His purposes for each of us during the period in which we live. David saved God’s people from destruction by slaying the giant Goliath, prepared the materials and laid the plans for Solomon to build the first temple, and wrote psalms that, to this day, bless the lives of all of us who love the Lord. Christian, God probably isn’t going to make you king or use you to change the course of national affairs; and you may never write even an uninspired hymn. But He calls none of His children to purposeless living. David served God’s purpose for his day. For what purpose did God save you in your day? You are where you are, at this time in history to serve some purpose. What is it? Do you know? If not, then what are you doing to discover it? If you know, are you achieving it?[1]
