Good morning,
Today’s photo of the sun peaking through a roadside forest as a jet makes bee-line toward heaven in a cloudless blue sky comes to us from yours truly as I capture this serene scene while walking up Waite Rd this past Saturday.
Well, it’s Monday and as I continue to adapt to the realization that my 28 year career at my secular day job has been terminated I am thankful for the Lord’s grace and His mercies which are new each morning.
On Sunday’s Bible Study with the Cincotti’s podcast, I asked the question: “Why are God’s mercies new every morning?” and answered: “Because they have to be!” God’s mercies need to be new every morning in order for grace to work. If God’s grace was a one-time gift that was only good enough to cover our past and present mistakes, it wouldn’t be grace. If we are ever left to our own devices to earn God’s love, even for a single day, we would undoubtedly fail because even if we didn’t fall into obvious sin, we would fail to represent God and His kingdom perfectly somehow. We have to remember that even though faith in Jesus Christ frees us from the law, Jesus’ new covenant goes beyond the law’s impossible requirements and makes us accountable for our thoughts and intentions. Jesus’ sermon on the mount shows us how anger and lust in our hearts are seen by God and in need His forgiveness.
In Matthew 5:22 (NLT) Jesus said: “22 But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell.
So we have to watch how the anger in our hearts and the angry words may come pouring out. Likewise we have to watch what our sinful hearts desire.
In Matthew 5:28 (NLT) Jesus warns us about our lustful thoughts, where He said: 28 But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
So God’s grace and mercies must be new every morning, otherwise we would never have a moment’s peace. God forgives us our sins unconditionally when we put our faith in Jesus. True followers of Christ will grow in sanctification as they continue to live with and for God but God’s mercy and grace needs to be given on a continuous basis because Christians aren’t immediately transformed into the perfect sinless image of Christ and we are going to make mistakes.
While my former employer’s forgiveness had a limit, God’s not like that. God doesn’t fire us when we mess up. We are His children and doesn’t reject us when we fail. While God wants us to repent and to walk in His ways, He doesn’t condemn us until we get there. He leads us through the abundance of His love and the grace and mercies that do not quit.
When we make a major blunder in our lives, like I did, each morning we awaken with the realization that the consequences of our failure has followed us to a new day. We can’t escape the consequences of our failure and just pretend everything is okay because God loves us. However, we also should realize even though God has allowed the test of our failure to manifest into our lives, and obviously would like us to learn from it, He never condemns us for our failures. Yes, God calls us to repentance and encourages to never make the same mistakes twice but He understands that our growth process is going to take some time. He sees the end from the beginning and knows how long our sanctification will take. Our failure could be a chastisement from the Lrod for living foolishly, but it should never be seen as a punishment or a reason to condemn ourselves.
Whether we walk perfectly or we make a mistake, God loves us and has accepted us based on His mercy and grace – not because of our performance. God makes us new creations when we put our faith in Jesus and that is why we can rejoice each new day. Because just like the consequences of our failures follow us into each new day, the consequences of our new lives in Christ follow us there too. The consequences of new lives in Christ are greater than any consequences for our mistakes. We are forgiven and free in Christ and the Lord wants us to walk in a manner worthy of that freedom. God may chastise us to show us the right way to live but His mercies and grace empowers us each new day to walk with Him confidently, assured of His love and acceptance.
Speaking of the Lord’s chastisement and incredible acceptance, the Turning Point with David Jeremiah devotion for today addresses those topics so I am sharing it on the blog today to remind us all of His continuous grace. David Jeremiah writes:
“SLOW TO CHIDE
So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” – Genesis 16:2
One of our greatest hymns, “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven,” was written by a British vicar named Henry Lyte. You’ll find great encouragement from a phrase about God in the second stanza having to do with God’s grace and favor. Lyte said our Lord is “slow to chide and swift to bless.” We need a God like that because we’re so prone to sinfulness and mistaken actions.
Take Sarah (Sarai), for example. She was impatient for God’s promise to be fulfilled, so she devised a plan that involved Hagar, her maid, to have a child with Abraham in her place. We, too, get impatient and do things God doesn’t want us to do. But the Lord forgave Sarah, and in the end, He still used her to fulfill His promise.
When we make mistakes, the Lord is merciful, and that’s why we can sing, “Praise, my soul, the King of heaven.” Praise Him today for the daily mercy He imparts to us. – David Jeremiah
Praise him for his grace and favor to his people in distress. Praise him, still the same as ever, slow to chide, and swift to bless. – Henry Lyte
Amen. Even after we put our faith in Jesus, we are still prone to make mistakes. In our ignorance and impatience, we can still find ourselves doing things that God doesn’t want us to do. Even though God gives us peace through the Holy Spirit, we can still find ourselves losing our cool and having attitudes and actions that don’t represent the Lord faithfully.
But that’s why the gospel is such good news and that’s why we can rejoice that God is so kind and merciful.
Our salvation was never about us earning it through our good deeds. Our salvation comes to us as a free gift of God’s love and, once received, God never stops giving us the gift of His love, mercy, and grace. After we put our faith in Jesus and choose to follow Him, God’s grace follows us all the days of our lives.
So when we make mistakes, God is still with us and continues to forgive us for what we do and seeks to encourage us to keep walking with Him until the mistakes become less and less and His godly character in our lives is seen more and more.
So rest easy in the knowledge that God loves you and is with you. We are far from perfect but God loves us perfectly and He is patiently waiting for us to learn how to live according to His ways. Once we put our faith in Jesus, God will never leave us or forsake us regardless of the mistakes we make. But let’s come on board with God’s promises and live a life that shows our appreciation for gift that we have received.

This morning’s meditation verse comes from the section on Persecution.
Psalm 119:51 (NASB) The arrogant utterly deride me, yet I do not turn aside from Your law.
Today’s verse is the first of three passages of scripture that fall under the fourteenth point of our counseling reference guide resource section on Persecution.
14. Believers can keep God’s Word when they are persecuted. David did.
Today’s Bible verse testifies to the fact that we will be persecuted by the arrogant unbelieving world but it also testifies to how steadfast we can be to follow the Lord’s instruction.
Even if the world hates us and derides us for being followers of Jesus Christ we can imitate the David, a man after God’s own heart, and decide to stay on the course that God lays out for us to follow.
The Holy Spirit gives us the strength to endure the testing of persecution and affliction so stay close to the Lord in prayer to receive the strength to walk in the Spirit.

Day 315
strengthening the … disciples, encouraging them … telling them they must enter … – Acts 14:22
That is, “enter God’s kingdom through many afflictions.” Here were disciples of Paul and Barnabas who understood such comfort. They had seen the consequences of faith in the life of Paul, who was persecuted in their midst. This prediction was not a perfunctory matter; it would involve loss, pain—and in some cases, even death! The disciples of Christ who composed congregations in these remote areas were going to need cohesion and direction. So, “in every church” the apostles “appointed elders,” whose lives and ministries they committed to the Lord (v. 23). Elders have, as one function, to guide the church through turbulent waters. They are, therefore, essential to every church. Respect and obey those who have the rule over you in the Lord (Hebrews 13:17). God ordains their task; you will need their ministry in times of need, and, therefore, it is essential.[1]
