Today’s photo of clear blue skies over trees standing on the edge of a snow-covered ridge and the valley below comes to us from yours truly, as I captured this chillingly beautiful scene during a visit to the Thacher Park Scenic Overlook on February 11th, 2022.
Well, it’s Saturday, and I share this high-and-lifted-up winter overlook as a visual reminder that even in the coldest and most exposed seasons of life, God places us on solid ground — and gives us a view that we could never have seen from the valley floor. I also share it to remind myself to be grateful for spring and the Lord’s help in getting me through one of the most challenging winters of my life. Not only was Wintnter 2026 one of the coldest winters experienced in my lifetime, but it was also one of the most challenging ones, because of my forced career transition from outside field tech to in-office tech support, but the Lord was with me and has helped me to see that it was all a part of His plan to move all things together for my good. Although the transition was unplanned, it spared me from working outdoors during the coldest winter in a decade. Now, I spend my days helping many people navigate the stress of losing internet connectivity or account access in the climate-controlled environment of an office. I really see God’s hand in sustaining and providing for me during this stressful time and moving me to places that are a better fit for me overall. It has not only helped me to meet my needs, but it has also taught me a valuable lesson in humility and reinforced the fact of the Lord’s presence in my life.
I hope you are enjoying your weekend and finding rest in the Lord’s presence, wherever the day takes you. TammyLyn and I are continuing to settle into our new home in Glens Falls, and every day there feels like a fresh page in a new chapter that God is writing for us. I am grateful for every step of the journey — including the cold ones.
We’ve been walking through a series called “Who You Are in Christ,” and so far we’ve settled three powerful truths. We have seen that: you are not what you did — your past failures do not define you. We have seen that: you are not what was done to you — someone else’s sin against you does not have the final word over your identity. And yesterday we said that you are not what you feel — your emotions, as real as they are, are not the measure of your worth or the truth about who God says you are. Today I want to speak to a fourth lie — one that may be the quietest, but in many ways the cruelest of them all.
Undoubtedly, some of us have been carrying a deep, aching sense that you are fundamentally, permanently, alone.
Maybe it started with abandonment. Maybe it grew through years of being misunderstood, overlooked, or left out. Maybe you have suffered more than your share of broken relationships to the point that you honestly feel that:
Nobody is really with you. Nobody really sees you. And you are totally, completely, on your own.
But God wants you to know: You are not alone.
Look at today’s photo for a moment. Those bare trees standing at the edge of a wind-swept ridge in February — exposed, stripped down to their branches, standing against the cold — and yet the sun is shining, the sky is blazingly, brilliantly blue, and the view from that ridge stretches on for miles and miles. There is beauty in the exposure. There is glory in the elevated place. And the trees are still standing.
That’s you. That’s where God has you — elevated, seen, and held — even when the season feels cold and bare.
Deuteronomy 31:8 tells us: “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
This wasn’t a gentle suggestion — it was a promise spoken to a man named Joshua who was about to walk into one of the most daunting assignments of his life. And God’s message to him was essentially this: I am already out ahead of you. I am beside you. I will not leave.
Knowing that God was with me and would never leave me or forsake me was one of the most important promises that I held onto during the MANY trials of my life since coming to faith in Christ. That same promise belongs to you today.
Here’s what I’ve come to understand after years of walking with people through their pain: loneliness is one of the enemy’s most effective tools — because it isolates you from the very community and connection that God designed to help carry you through. When you believe the lie that you are alone, you stop reaching out. You stop asking for help. You pull back from the Body of Christ, from accountability, from honest relationship — and you try to white-knuckle your way through life on your own strength. That is exactly where the enemy wants you.
But you were never designed to do this alone. From the very beginning — before the fall, before sin entered the world — God said, “It is not good for man to be alone.” Connection is not a luxury. It is a God-given necessity.
And beyond the community of friends, family, and the body of Christ, you have something even greater: you have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Jesus told His disciples in John 14:16-17 that He would send a Helper — the Holy Spirit — who would be with them and in them. Not standing at a distance. Not watching from afar. In them. The Holy Spirit lives in you if you have placed your faith in Christ. You are never, at any moment, truly alone.
God sees everything — every valley, every shadow, every cold and exposed season of your life — and He has not looked away. He has not abandoned His post. He goes before you, He walks beside you, and He lives within you.
You are not alone.
Receive that truth today. Let it begin to push back against the long silence and the aching isolation you may have felt for years. Reach out to a brother or sister in Christ. Step back into the community of faith. And above all — talk to God. He is not far away. He is right there with you and seeking to guide you and comfort you through all the seasons of your life.
The path ahead may feel wide and cold and exposed — but you are not walking it alone.
Keep on walking and talking with God.
