The Same Spirit

 — By M.T. Clark — P-1966, 05/18/2026 — Today’s Audio Podcast

Today’s Message on YouTube:

Today’s photo of a bright summer sun breaking through a wide blue sky filled with cumulus clouds, stretching over a flat green farmland field, comes to us from yours truly as I captured this big-sky moment while walking along Waite Road in Easton, NY, back on August 6, 2022.

Well, it’s Monday, and I share this photo as a reminder of how big God is and how big His provision is as we begin another work week. The God who paints a sky like that is the same God who walks with you into work today. The week ahead is not too big for Him. So, take a deep breath, ask the Holy Spirit to lead you, and step into Monday, knowing that the Lord goes with you.

Our series, “Walking in the Spirit,” begins its second week today with a look back at where the Holy Spirit has been from the very beginning.

The Same Spirit

The Holy Spirit is not a New Testament invention.

Some believers may think of the Holy Spirit as something that started showing up around the book of Acts. Jesus rose from the dead, ascended to heaven, sent the Holy Spirit as the Helper, and the Apostles got to know Him personally at Pentecost.   For many of us, that is where the Spirit’s story begins.

But the Bible tells a much longer story. The Holy Spirit has been moving since before there was anything to move over.

Genesis 1:2 puts it plainly:

“The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” — Genesis 1:2 (NKJV)

Before there was a sun, a sky, or a single blade of grass, the Holy Spirit was already present. Hovering. Watching. Ready to move at the Father’s word.

The same Spirit who hovered over the chaos of the formless deep is the Spirit who lives in every believer today. He has not lost any of His creative power. He has not run out of ideas. He still hovers over the chaos. The difference is that now, in the new covenant, the chaos He is hovering over is the inside of you and me.

This is one of the most important truths a believer can settle.

The Holy Spirit, who is in you, is the same Spirit who spoke worlds into being.

He has been faithful from the very first verse of Scripture. He filled Bezalel to design the tabernacle in Exodus. He came upon the judges to deliver Israel. He spoke through the prophets. He descended on Jesus at His baptism in the form of a dove. He raised Christ from the dead. He filled the disciples and made them speak in different tongues at Pentecost.

And then He took up residence in the heart of every person who has placed their faith in Christ.

That is the Spirit who lives in you.

I bring this up at the beginning of Week 2 because the longer we walk this road, the easier it is to forget who is doing the walking with us.

We can get used to the Holy Spirit’s presence the way we get used to the sky overhead. It is so consistent that we stop looking up. We can easily treat the Holy Spirit like background atmosphere instead of like the very life of God dwelling in us.

But the Spirit-led life requires us to remember.  We are to:

  • Remember that the same Spirit who lives in you is the same Spirit who hovered over the waters at creation.
  • Remember that the same Spirit who lives in you is the same Spirit who anointed Jesus for ministry.
  • Remember that the same Spirit who lives in you is the same Spirit who broke open the tomb on Resurrection morning.
  • Remember that the same Spirit who lives in you is the same Spirit who is currently building the church across every continent on this planet.

The Holy Spirit is always there. He is not waiting for you to feel something before He moves. He is in you, He is faithful, and He is at work — even when the week ahead looks chaotic, even when you cannot see how today is going to come together, even when the only honest prayer you can pray is “Lord, I don’t know what I am doing — please help.”

Paul talks about this exact reality in Romans 8:11:

“But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” — Romans 8:11 (NKJV)

The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead is the same Spirit who is alive in you right now.

That changes the shape of all our days. We do not walk through life alone. We walk through life with the same Spirit who has been faithfully moving since before there was life at all.

So, as you step into this Monday, ask the Holy Spirit to do what He has always done.

Ask Him to hover over the chaos.

Ask Him to bring order to what feels formless. Ask Him to lead you, fill you, and walk with you into whatever the week has waiting for you.

He is faithful. He has been faithful since Genesis 1. And He will not stop being faithful, ever.

Keep on walking and talking with God because the Holy Spirit is faithful to keep on walking with you.
