The Holy Spirit Is Already at Work

Today’s Message on YouTube:
Today’s photo of a blazing morning sun rising over a wide dirt path — flanked by a small white outbuilding on the left, a chain-link fence and pond on the right, a mother goose and her goslings making their way along the bank, and a single bird in flight overhead — comes to us from yours truly, who captured this scene during a Sunday morning walk through East Field Park in Glens Falls, NY on May 17, 2026.
Well, it’s Monday, Happy Memorial Day, and I share this photo as a reminder that the new week begins under the same sun that rose yesterday, and the same Lord who walked with us through last week is the Lord who is walking with us into this one. As we remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country, we remember the God that welcomes his faithful children on the other side of eternity and who, through the Holy Spirit, continues to work through us to give us peace.
Our series, “Walking in the Spirit,” begins its third and final week today with a truth about how the Spirit-led life actually starts each morning.
The Holy Spirit Is Already at Work
The Holy Spirit does not wait for you to wake up.
By the time you open your eyes each morning, the Holy Spirit has already been at work — moving in the hearts of the people you will see today, preparing the conversations you will have, shaping the situations you have been worried about, opening doors you do not yet know exist, and changing the circumstances you cannot see from where you are standing. The Spirit-led life is not about summoning the Holy Spirit into your day. It is about waking up to what He is already doing.
Jesus said it this way in John 5:17 (NKJV): “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”
The Father is always working. The Son is always working. The Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father and is sent in the name of the Son, is always working. The Trinity does not take a day off. The Holy Spirit was up before you were. He has been on the job since before the sun rose.
Most of our frustration in the Christian life comes from forgetting this. We get up. We feel like we are falling behind. We feel under-equipped. We start the day in a posture of striving to catch up to what we think the Lord expects us to do. And in that striving, we miss the fact that He has already arranged the day for us. He is not asking us to build the day. He is asking us to walk into it.
Philippians 2:13 (NKJV) tells us: “For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” —
It is God who works in us – to will and to do.The willing is His work in us. The doing is His work in us. Each day He is working in us. Our part is to keep in step with what He is already producing — the desires He is planting, the convictions He is forming, the opportunities He is presenting, and the obedience He is calling us to.
Walking in the Spirit is not about white-knuckling our way into spiritual readiness. It is about cooperating with what God has already prepared.
Here is the practical application. Before your feet hit the floor:
- Take a thirty second pause.
- Acknowledge the Lord.
- Tell Him you know He is already at work and ask Him to open your eyes to where He is moving today.
That is it. That is the whole prayer. Some mornings the answer will come within an hour. Some mornings it will come at the end of the day. But every morning, the Holy Spirit is there before you, and He is ready to be recognized.
I want to encourage you with one more thought as we begin this final week of the series. The Holy Spirit’s faithfulness does not depend on your awareness of it.
Even when you are too tired to pray, too rushed to listen, too distracted to notice — He is still working. He does not abandon you because you forgot to invite Him into your day. Your invitation is not required for Him to show up. He is already there.
This is one of the great mercies of the Spirit-led life. The Holy Spirit does not measure His commitment to us by our consistency in seeking Him.
He measures it by the faithfulness of the One who sent Him. The Father sent the Spirit. The Son confirms the Spirit. The Spirit indwells the believer. And nothing can undo the arrangement that the Trinity has already settled.
So step into your day today, knowing that The Lord is already there. The Holy Spirit is already at work. Your job is not to bring Him into your week. Your job is to keep walking and talking with Him as you watch Him work in your life.
