Put On the Full Armor of God

Today’s Message on YouTube:
Today’s photo of storm clouds parting to reveal a wide luminous sky of blue over a wet highway stretching south toward the Albany skyline comes to us from yours truly as I captured this stunning view while driving southbound on the way back to my riverside home, on June 29th, 2021.
Well, it’s the start of a new week, and a new month, and I share this photo as a reminder that the same God who clears the skies after a storm is the same God who opens the road ahead of us when we trust in Him. Whatever came before — whatever the last stretch of road looked like over the last 5 months of 2026, we begin month six, reminding ourselves that God is still in control. The Lord is sovereign over the weather and all the circumstances of our lives, so we should begin June with the confidence that God is with us and will be faithful to help, guide, and protect us when we walk with Him.
Speaking of the Lord’s protection, we begin a new series today — “The Armor of God,” drawn from Ephesians 6:10-18. Over the next four weeks, we will walk through each piece of the armor the Lord has provided for every believer who is engaged in the real spiritual battle of the Christian life. Today we begin at the beginning — with the command that precedes every piece of armor.
Put On the Full Armor of God
There is a war going on in our lives.
That’s not a metaphor, a motivational framework, or a dramatic way of describing the internal struggle between good choices and bad ones. There is a real, invisible, ongoing conflict between the kingdom of God and the forces of darkness happening right now — and every believer is in it, whether they know it or not.
Paul addresses this directly in Ephesians 6:10-12 (NKJV):
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
Read that again, slowly. We do not wrestle against flesh and blood. The person who hurt you is not the enemy. The circumstance bearing down on you is not the enemy. The diagnosis, the financial pressure, the broken relationship, the addiction that keeps coming back — none of these are the enemy. They are the battlefield. The enemy is the one using the battlefield against you.
This is one of the most clarifying truths in all of Scripture — and one of the most consistently ignored. We spend enormous energy fighting against people, circumstances, and outcomes, exhausting ourselves against things that are not the actual source of our problems. Meanwhile, the real adversary works in the background, largely uncontested, because we are too busy fighting the wrong things.
Paul’s instruction is specific: put on the whole armor of God. Not some of it. Not the pieces we find comfortable or familiar. The whole armor — every piece, every day, as a deliberate act of preparation for a battle that does not take days off.
And here is something important to know: the armor is not earned. It is not the reward for a certain level of spiritual maturity. It is provided — available to every believer in Christ, from the newest convert to the most seasoned disciple. Paul does not say “earn the armor” or “deserve the armor” or “work up to the armor.” He says to “put it on.” The armor exists. The believer’s responsibility is to wear it.
Also, notice the reason why Paul tells us to put on the armor: “that you may be able to stand.” It’s not to advance. It’s not to conquer territory, and it’s not to defeat the enemy single-handedly. The reason we put on the armor is to stand – to hold our ground and to remain upright under pressure. The purpose of putting on the armor is to refuse to be moved from the truth of who you are in Christ and what the Lord has called you to do. That is the goal of the armor of God. It’s not aggression but endurance. It’s not an attack but stability.
In the weeks ahead, we will walk through each piece of the armor in detail — the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. Each piece has a specific function. Each piece addresses a specific vulnerability the enemy consistently targets. Each piece is available to us right now.
But before we get to any individual piece, we need to settle the foundational reality: we are in a battle, the battle is real, and the Lord has equipped us for it.
The armor of God is not a religious concept. It is a lifeline. And this series exists to help you learn how to wear it.
Keep on walking and talking with God.
