The Belt of Truth

Today’s Message on YouTube:
Today’s photo of Winslow Homer’s 1877 oil on canvas “Two Guides” depicting two men standing together on a mountain ridge, one pointing toward the horizon as rolling hills and billowing clouds stretch out behind them, comes to us from yours truly, who captured this work of art at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA, on July 9th, 2023.
Well, it’s Wednesday, and I share this artistic mountain scene to visually represent our arrival to another mid-week summit, so happy hump day, and to remind us to seek the guidance of other Christians who have “been there and done that” when it comes to walking by faith in the power of the Holy Spirit.
I am looking forward to another meeting of the Celebrate Freedom Support Group at Starpoint Church tonight, and I invite anyone who is looking for freedom or a deeper relationship with God to join us on the journey of Christian recovery and discipleship. We can point you towards a new way to live, and God will give you the strength to overcome whatever hurts, habits, and Hangups you have to get you there.
Our series, “The Armor of God,” continues today with the first piece that Paul names after the command to be strong in the Lord.
The Belt of Truth
The first piece of armor Paul names is not the most dramatic, but it is the most foundational.
“Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth…” Ephesians 6:14a (NKJV)
The belt of truth is mentioned before the breastplate, before the shield, and before the sword because the first thing a Roman soldier put on before battle was his belt, because everything else was attached to it.
The breastplate is connected to the belt. The sword hung from the belt. Without the belt, nothing else stayed in place. The belt was not the most visible piece of armor. It was the piece that held all the other pieces together.
Paul names the belt first because he is telling us something about the order of spiritual warfare.
Truth is the foundation on which everything else rests.
If the belt of truth is not in place, if we are living in deception, tolerating lies about who we are or who God is, and are operating from a false version of reality, then none of the other pieces of armor will function the way they are designed to.
The enemy knows this. Which is why his primary strategy is not direct assault. It is deception.
Jesus tells us in John 8:44 that the devil is a liar and the father of lies. Satan does not primarily come at the believer with temptation. He comes with a question. Did God really say…? The same opening line from Genesis 3 is still in use today.
Every spiritual stronghold in a believer’s life can be traced back to a lie that was believed — about God, about us, or about the nature of reality.
The belt of truth is the answer to the enemy’s strategy. It is the daily decision to live according to what is actually true rather than in what the world, the flesh, or the devil tells us is true.
There are two dimensions to the belt of truth worth understanding.
The first is objective truth, which encompasses the truth of God’s word, the gospel, the character of God, and the identity of the believer in Christ. This is the truth that does not change based on circumstances or feelings.
Romans 8:1 is true whether you feel condemned or not. Your identity as a child of God is true whether you feel worthy or not. The word of God is the objective foundation of the belt of truth.
The second dimension of the belt of truth is personal integrity — the commitment to honesty in how we live. It’s not just believing true things but living truthfully.
I always teach that the first rule of discipleship is to stop lying — to yourself, to God, and to the people around you. The carnal Christian keeps their faith life separate from the places where they sin.
The Spirit-led believer brings them into the same room and lets the truth of God’s word speak to both. That is the belt of truth worn in practice.
When the belt of truth is in place — when you know what God says about you, and you are living with integrity rather than in compartmentalized deception — the enemy loses his primary weapon.
Satan cannot deceive a man who is already standing in the truth. He cannot destabilize a woman who knows who she is in Christ.
The enemy’s lies still come. But they find no purchase in a life that is girded with truth.
Gird yourself with truth today. Know what God says about you, live from who you are in Christ, and let the belt of truth hold everything else in place.
Keep on walking and talking with God.
