The Sword of the Spirit

— By M.T. Clark — P-1985, 06/09/2026 — Today’s Audio Podcast

Today’s Message on YouTube:

Today’s photo of the front porch of Nenorod Cabin, its weathered log walls, wooden steps leading down to a morning path, and tall trees catching the first light of the day in a canopy of early summer green comes to us from yours truly, as I  captured this peaceful scene at the Merck Forest and Farmland Preserve in West Rupert, VT, on May 26th, 2025.

Well, it’s Tuesday, and I share this photo from a quiet Memorial Day morning at a cabin in the Vermont woods as a reminder that the Lord meets us in the still places just as faithfully as He meets us in the busy ones. Some of the best things that God has ever said to me, He has said in the early morning quiet before the day began. If you have not yet given the Lord the first quiet minutes of your day, consider it. God is already there. He is already speaking. The question is whether or not we will rise up to meet Him and listen to His voice.

Our series, “The Armor of God,” continues today with the one offensive weapon in the believer’s arsenal.

The Sword of the Spirit

Every other piece of armor Paul describes in Ephesians 6 is defensive. The belt holds everything together. The breastplate protects the chest. The shoes provide stable footing. The shield deflects incoming fire. The helmet guards the mind. All of it is designed to help the believer stand — to absorb the enemy’s assault without being overcome.

Then Paul names the sword in Ephesians 6:17b (NKJV):

“…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God…”

The sword of the Spirit is the one piece of armor that does not merely protect. It advances. It cuts. It drives the enemy back. And Paul identifies it precisely: the sword of the Spirit is the word of God.

Not the word of God in general — a vague category of spiritual input. The Greek word Paul uses here is rhema — the spoken, specific, living word of God applied to a particular moment.  Not just the Bible as a book, rhema indicates that the Bible is a weapon, activated by the Holy Spirit, spoken into the specific situation where the enemy is pressing.

The sword is not carried in a scabbard for display. It is drawn and used to fight.

Jesus modeled this in the wilderness. Three times the enemy came at Him — three specific temptations targeting His identity, His provision, and His authority. And three times Jesus answered not with argument, not with silence, not with willpower, but with the specific word of God spoken directly into the specific attack.

“It is written… It is written… It is written.” (Matthew 4:1-11).

The sword, drawn three times, drove the enemy back three times. The pattern for spiritual warfare has not changed.

This is what it looks like to wield the sword of the Spirit in daily life.

When the thought arrives that you are not enough — “It is written: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”(Philippians 4:13).

When the voice says you are too far gone — “It is written: there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus”(Romans 8:1).

When fear tightens its grip — “It is written: God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).

The sword is specific. The sword is spoken. The sword is the living word of God, held and used by a believer who knows it well enough to draw it when the attack comes.

This is why the daily reading of Scripture is not merely a devotional habit. It is weapons training. The believer who fills his mind with the word of God is the believer who has a full arsenal available when the enemy strikes.

The believer who neglects the word is the believer who reaches for the sword in the moment of attack and finds nothing there.

Pick up the sword. Know the word. Use it when the enemy comes — because he will come, and when he does, “It is written” is still the most powerful response in the arsenal.

Keep on walking and talking with God.
