The Wiles of the Devil

— By M.T. Clark — P-1988, 06/12/2026 — Today’s Audio Podcast

Today’s Message on YouTube:

Today’s photo of a turquoise Caribbean sea viewed from beneath a blue cabana canopy, with a palm tree, white sand beach, green coastal grass, and a rope railing in the foreground, comes to us from yours truly, as I captured this view from a rented cabana in Grand Turk, during a shore excursion of the David Jeremiah anniversary cruise with my wife TammyLyn back on December 29th, 2025.

Well, it’s Friday, thank God — and I share this photo from a restful afternoon at the beach as a reminder that the Lord provides rest even in the middle of difficult seasons. Not every Friday ends at a Caribbean port of call. But every Friday does end with the same God who was faithful to provide and to be with us throughout the week. Have a blessed weekend with the people He has placed in your life.

Our series, “The Armor of God,” continues today with a truth about why the armor is necessary in the first place.

The Wiles of the Devil

Paul does not tell us to put on the armor of God because the Christian life is dangerous in a general way. He tells us specifically why we need it in Ephesians 6:11 (NKJV), which tells us to: “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”

The Greek word for wiles is methodeia, from which we get the English word methodology. That Greek word doesn’t describe random chaos or brute force. It describes a method or a system. It indicates that what we read as the “wiles of the devil” is a deliberate, intelligent, carefully designed strategy aimed at the specific vulnerabilities of the specific believer being targeted.

This is extremely important to understand because most believers approach spiritual warfare as if the enemy is a blunt instrument or a force to be resisted. They view spiritual warfare as a general spiritual pressure that bears down on everyone equally. Paul describes something far more precise. The enemy has wiles — schemes, strategies, methods — that are tailored, targeted, and patient. He is not throwing darts blindly. He has studied each one of us. He knows where our armor is thin.

The enemy’s methodology follows a consistent pattern across Scripture. The enemy begins with deception. He deceives us with a question, a doubt, or a reframing of reality.

Did God really say…?

He does not attack the truth directly at first. He questions it. He suggests an alternative interpretation. He makes the lie feel reasonable before he makes it feel necessary. This is Satan’s Genesis 3 opening move, and it has not changed in six thousand years.

From deception, the enemy moves to accusation. He points to the believer’s record of failure as evidence that God’s promises do not apply.

Look what you have done. You know who you are. You think God is going to use you?

The accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:10) uses our real failures as ammunition against us. He does not have to make anything up or invent the failures. He just reframes our mistakes and our current or past sins as the reason for our disqualification with God, rather than the invitations to repentance and restoration that would bring us closer to the Lord.

From accusation, the enemy moves to isolation by suggesting that each one of us is uniquely broken, uniquely far gone, uniquely beyond what the community of believers could understand if they really knew us. Isolation is the enemy’s preferred environment. He cannot work as effectively in the light, in community, or in honest accountability. He wants to get us alone. He works best in the darkness of a shame that has decided it must be kept a secret and draws away from God and others.

Understanding the wiles does not require fear. It requires awareness. Paul’s instruction is not “be terrified of the devil’s schemes” — it is to “put on the whole armor of God.”

The awareness of the method is what makes the armor meaningful. When the believer knows that the deceptive thought is a wile, that the accusatory voice is a wile, and that the pull toward isolation is a wile — he stops engaging them as if they were legitimate and starts lifting the shield of faith to defend himself from their deceptive attacks.

The enemy is real. His methods are intelligent and deliberate. And the armor of God — worn daily, worn completely — is exactly sufficient for everything he brings against us.

So, be aware, be on guard, and stand against the wiles of the devil.

Keep on walking and talking with God.
