Living from Righteousness, Not for It

Today’s Message on YouTube:
Today’s photo of the golden light of a sunset over the water, breaking through the bare branches of winter trees, and soft clouds catching the last colors of the day, while the Schodack Creek holds the light in the distance, comes to us from yours truly as I captured this view on the commute home from work in Schodack Landing, NY, on January 31st, 2023.
Well, it’s Tuesday, and I share this end-of-day photo as a reminder that the Lord meets us in the ordinary moments. He meets us on the drive home. He meets us in the in-between spaces. And He meets us at the quiet ends of long days. You just have to be looking to receive His presence.
You do not have to be in church to notice Him. Sometimes He is most clearly seen on the way home, in a sky He painted for anyone willing to look up.
Our series, “The Armor of God,” continues today as we go deeper with the breastplate of righteousness and examine the difference between living from it and living for it.
Living from Righteousness, Not for It
There is a small word in Romans 5:1 (NKJV) that changes everything about how the believer relates to God.
“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
It says “Having been justified”, as in the past tense. It’s a done deal.
It’s not “being justified”, as if it were still in process. It’s not “hoping to be justified”, as if it were still uncertain. “It’s “Having been justified, as in it is already finished, it’s settled.
The righteousness that the breastplate represents is not something the believer is working toward. It is something the believer already possesses.
This is the difference between living from righteousness and living for it — and it is one of the most important distinctions in the entire Christian life.
The believer who lives for righteousness is trying to earn something. Every prayer, every act of obedience, and every spiritual discipline is an attempt to build a case, to accumulate enough good standing to feel acceptable before God.
This believer is exhausted, anxious, and never quite sure where he stands — because the standard is perfection and he knows he is not meeting it. He treats his relationship with God like a performance review that never ends.
The believer who lives from righteousness is operating out of something he already has. He prays, obeys, and pursues holiness not to earn God’s acceptance but because he already has it.
His obedience is an appropriate response, not a payment.
His spiritual disciplines are the natural expression of a settled relationship, not anxious attempts to secure one.
He lives like a son who already belongs, not like a servant auditioning for a place in the household.
Romans 5:1 settles the issue of performance. “Having been justified by faith, we have peace with God.”
The peace is present tense because the justification is past tense. The relationship is settled. The standing is secure.
The work that established it was finished at the cross, received by faith, and credited permanently to the believer’s account.
This is the breastplate of righteousness worn correctly. It is not the breastplate of my righteousness — my track record, my performance, my accumulated good behavior.
It is the breastplate of Christ’s righteousness, received as a gift and worn as a settled identity.
The believer who understands this is freed from the exhausting work of trying to earn what he has already been given.
So stop living for the righteousness you already possess.
The verdict is in. You have been justified. You have peace with God.
Now live from that settled place — not striving to become acceptable, but walking as one who already is.
That is how the breastplate was always meant to be worn.
Keep on walking and talking with God.
