Renewing the Mind

— By M.T. Clark — P-1994, 06/19/2026 — Today’s Audio Podcast

Today’s Message on YouTube:

Today’s photo of a city transit platform stretching between tall buildings with vintage lamps lining the boardwalk, elevated tracks running toward a bright blue sky, and the life of the city moving all around comes to us from yours truly, as I captured this view from Quincy Station while riding the West Leg of the Chicago “L” Loop back on October 7th, 2023.

Well, it’s Friday, thank God — and I share this photo from a memorable trip with my wife TammyLyn as a reminder that the Lord gives us good gifts along the way as we travel through life. The Lord provides the people we love, the places we get to see, and the unexpected moments of joy that punctuate the ordinary stretches of life. Be sure to notice them and to thank God for them, as I pray that you have a blessed weekend with the people He has placed in your life.

Our series, “The Armor of God,” continues today as we go deeper into the helmet of salvation and the daily work of renewing the mind that it protects.

Renewing the Mind

The helmet of salvation protects the mind. But protection is only half the picture. The mind that wears the helmet is also meant to be actively, continually renewed as Romans 12:2 (NKJV) tells us:

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

Two forces are described in this verse, and they pull us in opposite directions. The first is conformity, the constant pressure of the world to press the believer’s mind into its mold. The second is transformation, the renewing work that reshapes the mind according to the truth of God’s word. Every believer’s mind is always moving in one of these two directions. We are either being conformed to the world’s system of thinking and doing, or we are being transformed by God’s way. We don’t remain neutral. We are either going the way of the world that leads to corruption, or we are growing into the people of divine purpose that God calls us to be.

This is why putting on the helmet of salvation is not a one-time event. Of course, our salvation is settled. That does not change. But the mind that salvation secured must be continually renewed, because the pressure to conform to the world’s way, even after we are “saved”, never stops. The world system seeks to influence us through what we watch, what we read, what we listen to, what the people around us assume to be true, and what the culture insists is normal. None of it takes a day off. And a mind that is not being actively renewed by the truth of God’s word is, by default, being slowly conformed to a system that contradicts and denies it.

The word transformed here comes from the Greek word metamorphoō, where we get the word metamorphosis. It describes a complete change of form, the kind that happens to a caterpillar in the cocoon. This is not a minor adjustment. It is a fundamental shift from one state to another. And Paul says it happens through one specific means: the renewing of your mind. The transformation is not produced by trying harder to behave. It is produced by the ongoing renewal of how the believer thinks.

What does renewing the mind actually involve? It is the deliberate replacement of the world’s thought patterns with God’s truth. It is catching the thought that does not align with Scripture and consciously replacing it with what God says. It is filling the mind with the word of God so consistently that the truth becomes the default rather than the exception. It is taking captive every thought, as Paul says in 2 Corinthians 10:5, and making it obedient to Christ. The renewed mind is not a mind that never encounters lies. It is a mind that has been trained to recognize them and replace them with God’s truth.

Renewing the mind is the process that leads to transformation and comes with a promise attached. The renewed mind is the mind that can “prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God”.

The believer who renews his mind gains something practical: the ability to discern God’s will.  Renewing our minds causes us to see clearly and to navigate decisions with a mind that is aligned with the truth rather than through the cloud of the world’s distortions. A conformed mind cannot see straight. A renewed mind can.

So, guard the mind with the helmet of salvation — and renew it daily with the truth of God’s word. The protection and the renewal of the mind work together. One secures the mind. The other reshapes it. And the believer who attends to both walks through the world with a mind that is both guarded and clear.

Keep on walking and talking with God.
