Freedom Is a Person

Today’s photo of a magnificent sunset sky over a parking lot full of cars comes to us from yours truly as I captured this beautiful view just outside Regal Cinemas in Clifton Park Center on May 7th, 2022.
Well, it’s Saturday, and I share this ordinary scene from a shopping-center parking lot because it is a good reminder that the Lord is not only found on mountaintops or beaches. He is just as present in the plain and unremarkable places where most of our actual lives are lived. We can spend our days waiting for God to show up in something grand and miss Him in the ordinary, when the truth is that He is already here, in our everyday lives, closer than the air we breathe.
Take a moment this weekend to notice Him in the small and common things, because that is where He so often meets us.
Our series, “Freedom Stories,” continues with the truth that holds this whole series together.
Freedom Is a Person
We tend to think of freedom as a condition, a state of being unbound, and so we go looking for the right technique, the right teaching, or the right discipline that will finally produce that condition in us.
But Jesus does not point to freedom as a method we can master or a state, we can manufacture. He points to Himself.
He tells us plainly in John 14:6 (NKJV): “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
He does not say He knows the way, or teaches the truth, or offers a better life. He says He is the way, He is the truth, and He is the life.
Everything we have been chasing turns out to be found not in a system, but in a Person.
I spent years of my life treating freedom and peace as a technique to be mastered. I went looking for it in philosophy, in meditation, and in one practice after another, certain that if I could just find the right method and work it well enough, I would finally arrive at the peace I was searching for. And it always slipped through my fingers, because a technique cannot liberate you.
What finally set me free was not a better method or a stronger discipline. It was being found by a Person, Jesus Christ, who rescued me from the false belief that I could work my way into enlightenment and peace.
Realizing we don’t have to earn or work for peace, and freedom changes the whole nature of the search.
If freedom were a technique, then freedom could be obtained apart from God by anyone disciplined enough to master the steps. Plenty of sincere people spend their whole lives trying exactly that.
But because freedom is a Person, it cannot be downloaded, achieved, or earned. It can only be received in relationship with the One who is freedom Himself.
Here is what most people fail to understand. A technique only works as long as you keep performing it correctly, and the moment you falter, the freedom it promised falls apart in your hands.
Finding your peace and freedom through Jesus is different. Jesus holds onto you even on the days you aren’t “doing it right”. This is why freedom in Christ doesn’t evaporate when your feelings are low or your circumstances turn hard.
Our freedom in Christ is anchored in the Person who does not change, rather than in a mental state you have to keep generating.
The freest I have ever been is not the same thing as the freest I have ever felt. It is simply the settled truth that I belong to Jesus, and that He has no intention of letting go of me.
So, if you have been treating your freedom as a project you keep failing at, let me turn direct eyes off of the project and onto Jesus.
Stop trying to find freedom through techniques, and start drawing near to Jesus Himself, because He doesn’t hand out freedom from a distance. He is the way, and the truth, and the life, and when you have Him, you have all you need.
The door to the Father is not a method you have to discover. It is a Person, standing with His arms wide open, and His name is Jesus.
Keep on walking and talking with God.
