Your Freedom Story

Today’s photo of the waters of Niagara Falls tumbling over the brink into a rising cloud of mist, a curved walkway where visitors line the railing to watch, a stretch of green lawn with a lamppost off to the side, and the bright sun high in a clear blue sky over the Niagara river comes to us from yours truly, as I captured this epic scene of beauty during my brief visit to Niagara Falls, NY, on November 10th, 2022.
Well, it’s Saturday, and I share this photo of Niagara Falls to encourage you to consider doing something out of the ordinary this weekend and to thank God for the freedom He has given you to make plans and to go places you normally wouldn’t get to see.
Believe it or not, this visit to Niagara Falls in November of 2022 was only a pit stop along the way to a higher purpose, as I was on a “mission trip” of my own making as I arranged to go serve at a David Jeremiah Ministries event in Buffalo.
On my way to Buffalo, I spent a night in Oswego, the city of my undergrad alma mater, and drove right along the coast of Lake Ontario the following day until I pushed my way further west to Niagara Falls before moving on to Buffalo for the David Jeremiah event and a hostel where I bunked with strangers for a night. It was an amazing solo road trip because of the things I saw, but it was joy-filled and satisfying because I wasn’t alone. The Lord was with me, and the entire trip was a celebration of my faith, freedom in Christ, and relationship with God.
It truly was a full circle pilgrimage as I went to serve as altar counselor for the pastor who gave the message that led me to put my faith in Jesus so many years before. If my testimony is a freedom story – that trip to Buffalo would have been a nice chapter conclusion as the one who was lost got found and came back to thank and serve the one who led him to Jesus. Our series, “Freedom Stories,” comes to its close today with the freedom story God is writing in you.
Your Freedom Story
As we close, I want to hand the whole series over to you, because the point of every freedom story is to make more of them.
Paul gives us the calling, that every Christian carries, in 2 Corinthians 5:20 (NKJV), where he writes: “Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.”
An ambassador is someone who represents a kingdom, who carries a message, and who speaks on behalf of the One who sent them. That’s who we are as Christians, and it means that your freedom story isn’t just your own private testimony. It’s part of how God Himself is making His appeal to a world that needs to be reconciled to Him.
Think about what signifies your life. The freedom you’ve received, the grace that met you, the chains that were broken, were never given to you only for your own sake. They made you an ambassador, a living message, so that when you tell of what God has done, it’s as though God Himself were pleading through you with someone who hasn’t yet come home.
Your story, joined to the blood of Jesus Christ, becomes an instrument in the hands of God to reach the next person. That’s why the enemy works so hard to keep you silent and ashamed, and that’s why telling your story is one of the freest and most powerful things you’ll ever do.
So here at the end of our freedom stories series, the question turns from me to you. What has the Lord done in your life? Where did He meet you, what did He bring you up out of, which lie did He break, what chains fell off?
You don’t need to have it all together to tell your story. You don’t need a stage. You only need the willingness to be God’s ambassador to the people He has already placed around you.
Your freedom isn’t a feeling but a fact. Your story isn’t finished. It is still being written, and the God who began the good work in you is faithful to complete it.
Now go and tell others about what the Lord has done in your life and let God plead through you for the freedom of someone else.
