Today’s photo of rolling hay fields opening out toward the wooded Berkshire hills under a wide summer sky comes to us from my Facebook friend Bill Stewart, who captured this peaceful scene while he was out prospecting new hay fields in Tyringham valley on July 26th, 2026.

Well, it’s Monday, and I share this photo of these hay fields to remind us that our God is already out ahead of us — opening new opportunities we didn’t arrange for and pouring out mercy we never earned. Bill captured today’s photo while scouting new fields that he’d been offered to hay and sent it along with a line I can’t improve on: “The Lord works in mysterious ways.” Bill’s a believer, and He didn’t ask for this opportunity; it just suddenly came his way. We shouldn’t be surprised when good things come our way because God’s blessings follow His grace and His mercies are new every morning. Speaking of the mercy that’s waiting for us when we wake up…

Our new series, “Win the Morning, Renew Your Mind,” begins today with the truth that meets us before we are even fully awake.

Win the Morning, Win the Day

There is a mercy waiting for you before your feet ever hit the floor, and Jeremiah names it for us in Lamentations 3:22-23 (NKJV), where he writes that “through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

Let’s consider the timing of that verse for a moment, because the timing is the whole point. The prophet doesn’t say God’s mercies are new every so often, or new whenever we finally get our act together. He says they are new every morning. Before you have prayed a single word, before you have earned anything or repented of anything, the mercy for the new day has already been set out for you like bread on a table. When you are in Christ, you wake up each day with God’s grace and mercy before you.

This matters more than we tend to realize, because the first few minutes of the morning have a way of setting the tone for the day. Most of us know this from the times when our peace was stolen from us before our day even began.

You know what I’m talking about. You wake up, you reach for the phone, and before you are even half conscious a headline, a message, or an old worry have already grabbed a hold of you, and now your mood is set, your focus is bent, and your whole day is being framed by whatever distressing message has caused you to see the day before you, and your life for that matter, as a burden. Nothing in your actual life has changed in those ninety seconds, but your focus and perspective have been hijacked to see the world and your circumstances as being in hostile opposition to you.

If you don’t recognize what is happening, the first voice that gets your attention tends to steer the rest of your day.

Scripture understood this long before anyone studied the brain. The reason God’s mercies are described as a morning provision is that He knows how we are made. He knows that what we take in first shapes what we look for all day. And so, He offers Himself and His mercy to us each morning, not as one more item on the to-do list, but as the foundation that we are meant to stand on to face each new day with confidence and hope.  

Here is the freedom in this, and it is real freedom. If mercy is new every morning, then no morning is disqualified. You may have made huge mistakes in the past, and the condemnation, shame, and guilt want to drag you down before you even get up.  You may be in a season of repentance and rebuilding trust that tells you that you screwed up royally and that you have no one to blame but yourself. You may be waking up after the wreckage of yesterday. You may have gone to bed with a failure still fresh, sure that God is a little more distant toward you today than He was last week.

That is not what this verse says, though. God’s word tells us that His mercy is new. It is not leftover mercy, or dwindling mercy from a limited supply that your sins keep drawing away from. God offers us fresh compassion each day, made for the person you are and the situation you are actually in this morning.

The believer who blew it yesterday and the believer who walked closely with God yesterday wake up to the same mercy, because God’s mercy and grace were never based on our performance in the first place.

So, what do we do with a truth like this one? We let it get to us before the world does.

We are going to spend this whole series learning what it looks like to win the morning — not by adding a heavy religious routine to our lives that are already stretched thin, but by turning our first minutes toward the God whose mercy is already there waiting for us. We will talk about renewing the mind, about setting our thoughts on things above, about taking anxious thoughts captive, and about seeking God first. And underneath all of it will be this one foundation: we begin each day as a person God has already decided to be merciful to.

The world has spent a great deal of energy in recent years rediscovering that morning’s matter. What you feed your mind with first has a huge effect on your whole day. That much is true, and it is worth hearing. But the world stops at self-improvement.

We are after something deeper than a better version of ourselves. We are after the presence of God at the start of the day, and the renewing of a mind that has been set free. The goal is not a more productive you. The goal is to become the people that God created us to be and to be the ones who meet with the Lord before the noise of the world leads us astray.

Great is God’s faithfulness, brothers and sisters. It was faithful enough to meet you this morning, and it will be faithful enough to meet you tomorrow and the next day. The mercy is already on the table. We just have to remember to reach for it first. Every step we take toward the Lord is a step in the right direction.
