As Your Days, So Shall Your Strength Be

Today’s Message on YouTube:
Today’s photo of two dark blue Adirondack-style chairs sitting alone in a sunny green field and tall meadow grasses running back toward a distant tree line, under a bright blue sky scattered with wispy clouds comes to us from yours truly, as I captured this quiet hilltop rest at Harrier Hill Park in Greenport, NY, on June 5, 2021.
Well, it’s Saturday, and I share this photo of two empty Adirondack chairs sitting quietly on a hilltop with a wide view of the valley beyond to remind us that the Lord meets us in the simple hours, and that some of His best gifts arrive on ordinary days when we least expect them.
I took this photo back on June 5, 2021, during a brisk walking workout at Harrier Hill Park in Greenport, NY. It was one of those days when I could feel the season turning from spring toward summer, and I remember walking through the park with music in my ears and a grin from ear to ear.
That was a triumphant season of my life. I had survived the divorce, gotten settled into my new place in Stuyvesant, finished my master’s in Christian counseling, and completed my Community Freedom Ministry Associate training with Freedom in Christ Ministries.
I was walking in the calling the Lord had been preparing me for. I was doing freedom ministry at Rock Solid Church, and my heart was full. With God’s help, I had accomplished much, and I was freer than I had ever been in my life, up to that point.
I didn’t sit down on either of those chairs that day, but I don’t think I needed to. The Lord had already given me rest for my soul, and a quickening in my spirit, and the walk itself was the rest. That’s how God gives it sometimes, in the moving moment as much as the still one, in a body that gets to walk again after a long season of carrying too much.
Speaking of receiving what the Lord has for us, one day at a time,
Our series, “Win the Morning, Renew Your Mind,” continues today with a promise about strength for each day.
As Your Days, So Shall Your Strength Be
Near the very end of his life, Moses blessed the tribes of Israel, and to the tribe of Asher he spoke a promise that has steadied weary believers ever since, recorded in Deuteronomy 33:25 (NKJV): “Your sandals shall be iron and bronze; as your days, so shall your strength be.”
It is that last line we want to sit with this morning — “as your days, so shall your strength be”. God promises us strength measured out to match the days of our lives. God gives us strength day by day. He faithfully provides us with as much strength as each day requires.
Let’s notice what God does not promise. He doesn’t promise to hand us the strength for the whole road ahead, all at once. He doesn’t deposit a lump sum of endurance for the next ten years and sends us off to ration it. He promises that as our days come, so our strength will come.
For each day we are given, there will be enough strength for that day. This is the same pattern as the manna in the wilderness, which couldn’t be stored up but had to be gathered fresh each morning, exactly enough for that day. It is the same pattern as the mercies that are new every morning. God’s provision comes in daily portions, on purpose, because He is teaching us to depend on Him one day at a time.
And there is real kindness in that, though we don’t always feel it at first. Most of our exhaustion isn’t actually the weight of today. It is the weight of today plus every tomorrow we are trying to carry in advance.
We wake up and try to shoulder not only this day’s trouble but next week’s and next month’s, all at once, and of course we’re crushed, because God never gave us strength for a load like that. He gave us strength for our days, one at a time.
The reason we run out is that we keep trying to spend today’s strength on tomorrow’s burden. Jesus said it plainly in Matthew 6:34 (NKJV): “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
“Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” means that today has enough trouble for us to deal with. We shouldn’t burden ourselves with worrying about tomorrow before we take care of today.
Moses’ blessing in Deuteronomy 33:25 assures us that God will give us enough strength day by day. So God will give us strength to handle today’s trouble and, even though tomorrow will come with troubles of its own, God will provide strength to match tomorrow’s troubles too.
This is a comforting word for the quiet moments when the mind tends to run ahead to preemptively worry about the future. Sometimes, instead of resting in the quiet of a slower day, we lose our peace of the present moment by worrying about tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after that! We can exhaust ourselves by obsessing over days that haven’t even arrived yet.
But tomorrow’s strength isn’t available today, because tomorrow isn’t here yet, and it doesn’t need to be. When tomorrow comes, so will its strength. God isn’t late with the strength. He delivers it fresh, as the days arrive.
This is why the whole life we’ve been describing is lived one morning at a time. We don’t have to find, this morning, the strength for everything that is coming. We have to receive the strength for today.
The believer who has learned this stops trying to stockpile endurance and simply comes each morning to the Lord for the day’s supply of strength and wisdom, trusting that tomorrow’s supply will be there tomorrow. It takes the pressure off the present, because we aren’t responsible for generating strength for a future we can’t see. We are only responsible for receiving what we need for today.
I’ve leaned on this promise in my walk with the Lord, in seasons when the road ahead looked far longer than my strength could possibly stretch. And what I’ve found, every time, is that God was telling the truth. The strength never came all at once. It came as I needed it, day by day, exactly enough, so that I looked back and couldn’t quite explain how I had made it except that grace kept showing up on time. As my days have come and gone, so God’s strength has been. God’s strength has never come early or in bulk, but it has never come late either.
So don’t try to carry the burden of next week today. Receive the grace for today, rest in it, and trust that when tomorrow comes, its strength will come with it. God has promised us strength to match every day that we walk with Him. So be sure to meet with the Lord early and often to receive what you need to endure, to carry on, and to overcome the troubles of today, tomorrow, and all the days of your life.
Every step we take toward the Lord is a step in the right direction. So, keep on walking and talking with God.
