Well, it’s Wednesday, and I share this photo of a tall mountain range rising up over a wide blue lake to visually represent our arrival to another midweek summit, so happy hump day, and to remind us that God’s creation is full of quiet reminders that He is bigger, older, and steadier than any struggle we are trying to get through.

There is something about a range of mountains standing in the distance that puts our lives back into perspective. Those hills were there long before today, and they will be there long after today fades away. Of course, the same goes for the Lord who made them.

God isn’t worried or hurried by our schedules or worn out by our midweek fatigue. He sits above the days and holds them and the future in His hands. So, take a good look up before the day gets busy, and let the God of the mountains and the lakes remind you Who is really running things. When we lift our eyes to Him for a minute, we get to borrow a little of that steadiness for ourselves.

The Danger of Shallow Roots

Jesus once told a story about sowing seed that explains why some faith rises up fast and then fizzles out, and it’s a warning worth taking to heart. Describing the seed that fell on rocky ground, Jesus says in Matthew 13:5-6 (NKJV): “Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away.”

The problem with this seed wasn’t a slow start. Just the opposite. It sprang up immediately, faster than the rest, and looked like the most promising plant in the field. The trouble was hidden underground, where there was no depth for roots.

Jesus explains this soil later in the chapter. He says it represents the person who hears the word and “immediately receives it with joy,” but has no root in himself, so he lasts only a while, and when tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he stumbles.

So, the rocky-ground believer isn’t the person who rejects the gospel. It’s the person who receives it with real, immediate joy, but never lets it go deep. Apparently, there is a shelf of rock underneath these “believers”. Somewhere inside they have a hard place that the roots of God’s truth and love can’t get through, and so they live entirely on what’s near the surface. As long as the weather is mild and conditions are favorable, they look healthy, but the moment the sun of hardship comes up, they get “scorched” and wither away, because there is nothing underneath their surface-level faith to draw on.

This is a sobering picture, because shallow-rooted faith and deep-rooted faith can look identical on a good day. Both are green. Both have leaves. We often can’t tell them apart until the heat comes, and then the difference is total. One withers and one stands, and the deciding factor was settled long before the hard day arrived, down in the hidden work of the roots.

That is why we can’t wait for the crisis to come before we start growing deep in our faith. Our roots have to go down into our relationship with God and His word during the ordinary seasons, so they are already there when the sun comes up.

You could say that I sort of lived the rocky-ground pattern of faith at first in my walk with the Lord because I foolishly thought that the only thing that faith required was for me to say yes to Jesus as Savior.  But when I read God’s word, I realized that God calls us to a new life where we have to walk away from our sin and follow the way of Jesus. Thankfully, learning the truth didn’t burn me too badly, and God gave me everything I needed to put my roots down and grow deep.  

The rocky soil pattern is a real heartbreaker though. I’ve watched it in the recovery ministry for years. There is a kind of fast, emotional start in this pattern that feels wonderful and fools everybody, including the person who has it. I’ve seen people receive the word with real joy, get on fire for the Lord for a few weeks, or even months, and then vanish at the first hard thing that comes their way, not because their joy was fake, but because it never went deep enough to take hold of their hearts and minds.

So how do our roots go deep? They go deep through knowing God’s word and Spirit. Roots grow deep through the same slow way they always have, through the hidden disciplines that don’t feel like much in the moment. That means sitting in the Scriptures until they sink past the surface of our thinking. It means honest prayer with God. It means staying planted in the fellowship of God’s people. And it means letting the Lord work on the hard places in our hearts and minds, rather than pretending they aren’t there.

While none of these things produce the instant green of the rocky ground, they produce something better, a faith that is still standing tall when the sun gets hot.

So, don’t be impressed by fast growth in yourself or discouraged by slow growth, and don’t measure your faith by how green it looks on an easy day. Instead, ask whether your faith is growing down and getting deep.

Come to the Lord in the ordinary seasons, let Him break up the hard places in you, and send your roots deep into Him. A faith that has quietly grown deep in the good seasons is the faith that stays green when the heat is on.

Every step we take toward the Lord is a step in the right direction. So, keep on walking and talking with God.
