Christ, in Whom All Treasures Are Hidden

Well, it’s Friday, thank God, and I share this photo of a peaceful beach afternoon to remind us that some of the deepest treasures the Lord gives us come wrapped in the ordinary gifts of a quiet day, a good swim, and a moment to look up and say thank You.

TammyLyn was up in Alaska on a trip while this photo was taken, so I took a spontaneous solo drive down to Lake Taghkanic State Park to catch a summer swim while the season was still open. I found a great spot under a tree, took a short swim in the cool lake water, and then sat on my towel and looked up to the sky and thanked my Heavenly Father for the day, for the beach, for the blue sky, for the sun, and for the life He has given me. It was brief but wonderful, and it was one of those quiet moments that reminded me of the treasure of blessings that the Lord provides.

Speaking of the treasures the Lord has already given us in Christ,

Our series, “Rooted in Him,” continues today with Paul’s reminder that all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ.

Christ, in Whom All Treasures Are Hidden

The Apostle Paul takes us to the heart of what he is praying for the church in Colossians 2:2-3 (NKJV) when he tells us: “that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

Paul is praying for a church he has never met in person, and the deepest thing he asks for them is that they would come to know Jesus for who He really is. And Paul says something worth taking home: In Christ “are hidden ALL the treasures of wisdom and knowledge”. Not most of them, not the important ones; all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ.

The first thing Paul asks for is that their hearts would be “encouraged.” That word carries the sense of being strengthened from the inside out. Paul isn’t praying for their circumstances to change. He is praying for their hearts to be stronger inside the circumstances they already have. A settled heart is a heart that has met Jesus for who He is, and Paul knows that a settled heart carries a believer through everything.

Then Paul prays that they will be “knit together in love.” That is the language of community. The Christian life was never meant to be a solo project. The strength of a believer is bound up with the strength of the believers around them, and the love that ties us to each other is one of the ways the Lord holds us all steady. Paul is praying for the fabric of our faith to be knitted together with love for one another.

Then Paul says a mouthful that changes everything. He prays for the “riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ.” Paul is saying that there is a full assurance available to the believer, and it comes from knowing God, not from a technique or a method or a secret. The Christian life isn’t built on our confidence in our own understanding. It is built on our confidence that we belong to a God we know, through faith in Jesus. There is no greater gift than having full assurance that we have peace with God, through faith in Jesus Christ. 

Then Paul closes with the treasure line. In Christ “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” The word “hidden” here doesn’t mean lost or unavailable. It means treasured, kept, stored up. Paul is telling us that everything a believer will ever need to know about how to live rightly with God and with people, everything worth calling wisdom, and everything worth calling knowledge, is stored up in Jesus. There is nowhere else to go for it, and there is no need to go anywhere else for it. In Christ, we have the answers to life and death. In Christ, we have the wisdom and knowledge to not only go to heaven. We have the wisdom and knowledge to experience heaven on earth. Through a lifestyle of Christian discipleship, a believer can know peace and joy regardless of their circumstances.  

This is the rest for the wandering believer. A lot of us spent seasons of our life looking for the deeper truth in this teacher or that book or the next conference. Paul is telling us to stop looking past Jesus. He isn’t the door to the treasure. He IS the treasure.

I know this from my own life. Before I came to Christ, I chased wisdom in places it was never going to be found. I read the eastern religions and picked up whatever secret-sounding idea sounded like it might explain the emptiness. Every one of those roads came to a dead end, because the treasure I was looking for wasn’t there.

After the Lord saved me, one of the sweetest things I discovered was that I could stop looking. Jesus wasn’t a starter kit that I would eventually have to add to. He was the whole thing. Every question worth asking about God and about myself had an answer that was already in Him, and my part in our relationship was to keep going deeper with Him instead of looking around Him.

That is a lesson I am still learning. There is always something new to chase, another voice offering another insight, or another program promising another level. Paul is telling us that the treasure is already in our possession because Jesus is already ours. Growth in the Christian life isn’t the pursuit of a new source. It is the deepening of our knowledge of the source we already have.

We need help remembering this, and that is where the church, the body of Christ, comes in: when we walk with people who know Jesus, and we share what He is showing us, and we listen to what He is showing them, the community Paul prayed for gets tighter, and the treasures Paul named are received. The Christian life is a life of together-with-Jesus and together-with-His-people.

So, agree with Paul’s prayer today, and let the Lord draw you deeper into the wisdom and knowledge of Jesus, who has already given you every treasure worth having.

Every step we take toward the Lord is a step in the right direction. So, keep on walking and talking with God.
