Where Your Treasure Is

Today’s Message on YouTube:

Today’s photo of the sun breaking through the gap between a yellow tree and a red maple at peak color, with the autumn leaves scattered on the grass and apartment buildings in the distance, comes to us from yours truly, as I captured this view at what I call “the Park Hill clearing” along my lunch break walk on Wards Lane, in Menands, NY, on October 20, 2026.

Well, it’s Tuesday, and I share this photo to encourage you to “check in with God” at various times throughout your day, to build a more personal relationship with the Lord.

The “Park Hill clearing” is a place on my lunch break walk route in Menands, where I turn around to head back to the office. This spot is where I look up at the sky every day and say hello to God. Sometimes I give Him thanks. Sometimes I give Him praise. The sun is usually shining through the gap in the trees, and I imagine the Lord shining His light on me.

A midday walk is not a long prayer time, and a few seconds of looking up at the sky is not a formal devotional. But that is what makes the practice work. God doesn’t require long prayer sessions to meet with us. He meets us where we are, in the middle of a workday, and uses the small act of looking up to remind us Who we belong to.

So, find yourself a spot where you can look up at the sky. It does not have to be a beautiful place or a private one. The top of a stairwell at work, a window over a kitchen sink, or a bench along a sidewalk will all do. Give the Lord even a minute of your attention and a few words of thanks and praise, and watch what He does with it. Speaking of lifting our eyes to the Lord…

Our series “The Beatitudes” continues today with Jesus turning to the question of what we are actually storing up through our religious practices. He teaches us about treasures in heaven.

Where Your Treasure Is

Jesus moves from the question of how we practice our religion to the question of what we are actually investing in. In Matthew 6:19-21 (NKJV), Jesus tells us:

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Jesus names three negative forces that will come for anything we store up on earth. If given the chance, moths will eat our clothing, rust will corrode our metal, and thieves will break in and steal our stuff. Clothing, precious metals, and our other earthly possessions were the three main categories of wealth in Jesus’s day, and every one of them was already being threatened by something that could not be fully stopped. No matter what security systems we have, our material possessions aren’t safe.

Jesus isn’t making the point that it isn’t right to own things. The point is that whatever we are storing up, it is already in the process of being taken away.

But Jesus gives us an alternative. He tells us to lay up for ourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust cannot touch them and where no thief can break in. Everything we store on earth is subject to decay, loss, and theft. What we store in heaven is safe forever. The question Jesus is pressing is not whether we love beautiful things, but where we are investing our hearts for the long run.

Jesus closes with the point behind the whole teaching. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Notice the direction of that sentence. Jesus does not say that where our heart is, our treasure will follow. He says the opposite. Where we PUT our treasure is where our heart WILL end up. Our heart ends up following where we have invested our resources. If we want to know where our heart is set, we look at where our time, our money, and our attention are being spent. Those are the places that our heart is being pulled toward.

So, what counts as treasure in heaven?

It includes the giving we did when nobody was watching, the time we spent in prayer when we could have spent it on something else, the kind words we spoke to someone nobody else was being kind to, and the forgiveness we extended when we had every right to hold a grudge. Every act of obedience that we do because the Lord asked us to, with no earthly reward expected, is treasure that the Father who sees in secret is writing down. None of it is subject to the dangers of moths, rust, or thieves.

So, follow the Lord and do the good works that He has prepared for you to do. Keep your eyes open for opportunities to help and serve others and actively listen for God’s still small voice and go where He directs you. Treasures in heaven aren’t really earned. They are found when we follow God’s instructions to do His work on earth. So, seek God’s will and rejoice when He shows you how to become rich in His kingdom.

Every step we take toward the Lord is a step in the right direction. So, keep on walking and talking with God.
