Ask, Seek, Knock

Today’s Message on YouTube:
Today’s photo of a double rainbow arching over the backyard of my former countryside home with my wife TammyLyn standing in the grass under it, with my neighbor’s garden and autumn trees in the background, comes to us from yours truly, as I captured this view of domestic bliss in Easton, NY, on October 21, 2023.
Well, it’s Tuesday, and I share this photo as a reminder that God is a generous Father who delights in giving good gifts to His children.
God blesses His children continually – that means He blesses us all the time, every day. But even though God is faithfully blessing us every day with good gifts, if we fail to make a regular practice of thanking Him for the gifts He gives us, we will take them for granted, virtually forget about them, and focus on the problems we have in life or on the things we don’t have.
On October 21st, 2023 – The Lord blessed us with the spectacle of a double rainbow in our backyard, and as cool as that was, that day He had already blessed me with my wife TammyLyn, a day off from work, a nice place to live, and good health. He also blessed me with another day of my freedom in Christ, with the continuous forgiveness of my sins, and with a close personal relationship with Him that is enjoyed each morning with Bible Study and prayer.
Before you dismiss what I’m saying as sentimental Christianity, let’s be clear here. I didn’t always have these things. All of them are the result of answered prayers from my loving heavenly Father. God was gracious enough to save me, and because I was drawn to follow Him into my new life, I got to know that the Lord was for me and not against me, and I learned that when I followed His ways and asked for good things, God was faithful to give and keep on giving good things to me. His mercies are new every morning, and He is faithful to give us good things, as long as we ask. Speaking of asking God for good things….
Our series, “The Beatitudes,” continues today with Jesus turning from how we handle each other to how we come to the Father with what we need.
Ask, Seek, Knock
Jesus moves from telling us how to see each other clearly to telling us how to come to the Father with our needs. In Matthew 7:7-11 (NKJV), Jesus tells us:
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!”
Jesus gives us three verbs: ask, seek, knock. Each one is active and ongoing. The original Greek text of this scripture carries the sense that we are to ask and keep on asking; we are to seek and keep on seeking; and we are to knock and keep knocking.
Then Jesus assures us of the results of God’s promises. Everyone who asks receives. The one who seeks finds. To the one who knocks, it is opened. God isn’t stingy with His people. God isn’t slow to answer in the way that matters. God isn’t reluctant to be found by somebody who’s actually looking for Him.
But Jesus knows what we’re afraid of. We’re afraid that if we ask, we’ll get a stone instead of bread. We’re afraid that if we ask for a fish, we’ll get a snake. We’re afraid that God the Father is going to be the kind of parent we remember from our worst childhood moments: withholding, impatient, mocking, or cruel.
So, Jesus points to the ideal father-son relationship to assure us of God’s love for us. He says that if we, being evil, still know how to give good gifts to our own kids, how much more will the Heavenly Father give good things to those who ask Him?
The logic is simple and clear. A regular dad, who is a sinner, still finds a way to feed his hungry kid. So, God the Father, who is holy, perfect, and loving, won’t do less. He’ll do infinitely more.
So, ask and keep asking. Ask the Lord for the things you really need. Bring Him the fear you’ve been carrying, the person you’ve been praying for, or the door you’ve been standing outside of for years. God hears you. God is a good Father. And God gives good gifts to His children. If you ask and keep asking, one day you will be able to look back and thank God for the things He has given you through prayer, and you’ll have to stay diligent in being thankful for the good gifts He has supplied.
Remember, every step we take toward the Lord moves us in the right direction. So, keep on walking and talking with God.
