Celebrating Our Progress and Doing Our ONE JOB – Purity 1904

Purity 1904 on YouTube:

Good morning,

Today’s photo of a magnificent sunset sky over the railway line that runs along the Schodack Creek comes to us from yours truly, as I captured this serene scene (and about 40 others) as I drove back to River House on January 31st, 2023.

Well, it’s Friday, and I am rejoicing this morning after a successful 3-day fast, to draw close to the Lord, and I am looking forward to drawing close to my beloved wife, TammyLyn, at the end of the workday.  I extremely grateful for my new life in Christ and even though I am still far from perfect and have more work to do to become the person God created me to be, I can rejoice each new day because I have made a lot of progress since coming to faith in Jesus in 2010, so much progress in fact that I sometimes forget how I used to struggle with my former addictions.   I’m so focused on trying to represent the Lord through ministry and to win my remaining battles with the flesh that I completely forget – oh yeah, I used to be a drunk and an addict. I used to be consumed by lust.  I used to not be able to go a single day without alcohol.  But those struggles are so far gone from me now (11 years for the booze and drugs, nearly 8 years for sexual immorality) that I don’t even think about them.  But I shouldn’t forget, I should continually celebrate the work that the Lord and I have done together.  I should celebrate my freedom and find joy in my relationship with God and in the progress I continue to make.   God is good, and He has done a wonderful job of changing my life.

Speaking of jobs, the Turning Point with Dr. David Jeremiah devotion for today talks about our “one job,” and I am sharing it on the blog today to encourage us all to take the work that the Lord has given us seriously. David Jeremiah writes:

“ONE JOB

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. – Acts 1:8

A phrase is often heard in comedic movies and TV shows when someone fails to accomplish a given task: “You had one job!” In the right setting, that expression makes us laugh. But it also suggests an important lesson: the importance of focus.

Jesus communicated to His apostles a similar message before He ascended to heaven: Your one job is to spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 1:8).

Yes, that job has many dimensions just as Jesus’ earthly ministry was multifaceted: teaching, preaching, caring for the needy, influencing society, and more. But the focus—the umbrella that covers all those exercises—is spreading the Gospel to all the world. Why?

Because the whole world is under the influence of Satan (1 John 5:19) and because a day is coming when the Antichrist will seek to dominate the world (Revelation 13:3).

Be reminded today of your “one job” as a follower of Christ: to spread the Gospel to all the world.” – David Jeremiah

Always and everywhere the servants of Christ are under order to evangelize. -J. I. Packer

Amen.  Jesus commanded all of his disciples to go and make more disciples from all the nations of the earth.

Jesus doesn’t call just pastors or teachers to share the gospel and to show others what being a follower of Jesus means, this call to make disciples is for everyone who has put their faith in Jesus.  No matter what our careers may be, this is the ONE JOB by which our lives will be judged.

Did you love others by sharing the love that God gave to you? Did you show them the way to peace with God and life everlasting?  Did you tell them about Jesus and offer to walk with them to help them follow His ways?

Jeremiah also points out that our ONE JOB is really serious.  Our efforts at discipleship aren’t intended just to increase church attendance.  Our ONE JOB is to rescue people from the kingdom of darkness and to give them the truth that will set them free.  Our ONE JOB will rescue people from the consequences of their sin and keep them safe.

Jeremiah also reminds us that there is a time limit to how long Christians will have to work.

Lord willing, we have the rest of our lives to make disciples.  However, scripture teaches that a tribulation period will come that will mark the end of our ability to bring God’s peace to others.

So, whether it’s because of the ticking away of our own lives or the coming of the tribulation and the return of Jesus, we should do all we can to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to those who so desperately need Him.

Today’s Bible verse comes to us from “The Quick Scripture Reference for Counseling” By John G. Kruis.

(While Bible verses on various topics of Counseling can be found with a quick Google search, we encourage you to purchase this resource to support the late author’s work. (The Quick Scripture Reference for Counseling  By John G. Kruis on Amazon )

This morning’s meditation verses come from the section on the Providence of God.

Ruth (The whole Book of Ruth reveals this very beautifully.)

Ruth 2:11–12 (NASB) Boaz replied … “May the LORD reward your work, and your wages be full from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to seek refuge.”

Today’s verses are the first of two passages of scripture that fall under the ninth point of our counseling reference guide resource section on the Providence of God.

9. God blesses those who by faith take refuge in him.

Today’s Bible verses are words of blessing from Boaz to Ruth for her loyal devotion to her widowed mother-in-law and are merely the tip of the iceberg of God’s favor that would come into Ruth’s life because of her faithfulness.

Ruth had a decision to make when her husband was dead, and her mother-in-law was also widowed and decided to return to her home country of Israel: should I stay here within my pagan homeland with my family, or should I follow Naomi to Israel and choose to worship her God?   When given the same choice, the other daughter-in-law in this true story decided to stay, Ruth decided to go, and the Lord’s favor followed her with provision and the eternal blessings that come with being a follower of the One True God and being in the bloodline of Christ.

When we choose to follow the Lord through our faith in Jesus Christ, we receive His provision and His blessings. Let’s turn from the world and follow Jesus into the new life of favor and peace that He has for us.

Day 38 – Loss Suits – Read 1 Corinthians 6:1–8

The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. – 1 Corinthians 6:7

The church at Corinth was rapidly losing its testimony in the city. Not only did the unsaved know about the immorality in the assembly, but they were also aware of the lawsuits involving members of the church.

Paul detected three tragedies in this situation. First, the believers were presenting a poor testimony to the lost. Even the unbelieving Jews dealt with their civil cases in their own synagogue courts. To take the problems of Christians and discuss them before the “unjust” (1 Cor. 6:1 kjv) and “unbelievers” (v. 6) was to weaken the testimony of the gospel.

Second, the congregation had failed to live up to its full position in Christ. Since the saints will one day participate in the judgment of the world and even of fallen angels (vv. 2–3), they ought to be able to settle their differences here on earth.

There was a third tragedy: The members suing each other had already lost (v. 7). Even if some of them won their cases, they had incurred a far greater loss in their disobedience to the Word of God. Better to lose money or possessions than to lose a brother and lose their testimony as well.

Something to Ponder – How do you feel when someone takes advantage of you? What would be a biblical approach to this sort of circumstance?[1]
