Good morning. Today’s photo of a “supernova” sun shining over a cross-like utility pole and the clear asphalt pathway of Waite Road comes to us from yours truly, as I captured this serene springtime scene while walking back to my countryside home on Saturday.
Well, it’s Thursday, and I share this pathway photo as a visual encouragement or reminder to get on—or to stay on—the path of Christian discipleship, and to encourage us all to keep our heads up so we don’t miss out on the beauty that God puts before us.
Last night, I hosted another meeting of the Celebrate Freedom support group at Starpoint Church and enjoyed some deep conversation about our faith walk in the men’s small group at the end of the evening. Attendance on the men’s side of the house was down last evening, but our spirits were up as the few of us gathered could speak candidly about our individual journeys with God. We testified of how the Lord had taken us from guys who agreed with the basic principles of faith, but who still lived pretty worldly lives, to become surrendered disciples of Jesus who actually practice the spiritual disciplines that Christ modeled for us.
We discussed how, in our “pre-discipleship-shift” lives, we agreed that things like Bible study and prayer were good things, but we had no desire or conviction to actually practice those things or to live according to God’s Word. We each marveled over how God really caused us to change from “churchgoers” to men who actively sought to grow spiritually, to share the gospel with others, and to serve God’s kingdom. Even though we are all at different places on our journeys with the Lord, we all agreed that when we got serious about seeking the Lord’s will for our lives, we were moved to read our Bibles and to pray.
Speaking of prayer, I’m sharing the In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley devotion from yesterday because it addresses that topic and encourages us to go deeper with this fundamental Christian practice.
Charles Stanley writes:
“Praying on Our Knees
Only God can soften a heart and open a mind—let’s pray and watch Him work. — Hebrews 4:16
Have you ever been in a situation where people reacted negatively towards you? Maybe at this very moment you’re dealing with a difficult home life, work relationship, or situation at school.
The way to handle troubles is on our knees before the Lord. The heavenly Father waits for us to approach His throne through prayer so we can gain His divine perspective and receive instruction on how to proceed. But in our prayer time, a battle often takes place between what we want (avoiding conflict) and what the Lord has planned for us (to move through it in faith).
When we humbly seek the Lord through prayer, we invite Him to take the lead in our situation and to accomplish His plan. Scripture promises that He is our refuge, strength, and help (Psalm 46:1). He may direct us in ways we find surprising, but we can trust they will be for our good and His glory.
Praying on our knees is a gesture of humility, which reminds us God is the Master and we’re His servants. In fact, He can also see a humble attitude in those who cannot kneel. He knows all things, whereas our perspective is narrow. What’s more, He is all-powerful. He can soften hard hearts and open closed minds. We cannot. Let’s make prayer a regular part of our day and watch what God does in both our life and the lives of those around us. — Charles Stanley
Amen. Prayer is probably the hardest part of adapting to our new lives in Christ. Before we make the decision to surrender to Jesus as Lord, and not just Savior, we may not pray at all, or we might pray quick prayers before or during church or when we are desperate. But when God convicts our hearts through the Holy Spirit to go deeper into our relationship with Him, we finally seriously consider praying on a regular basis. When we decide to have a regular time of prayer and actually sit or kneel down to do it—that’s when things really change.
Of course, the transformation you receive will have a lot to do with how you pray. Google estimates that there are somewhere between 10 to 15 thousand distinct books on prayer. Obviously, many people have thought prayer is an important subject to tackle and undoubtedly have different ideas on the subject. Although God can use any form or posture of prayer to come into your life in a more significant way, I recommend having a “conversational prayer life”—where you don’t just petition the Lord with requests, but where you talk to Him as a wise friend, ask questions, and actually pause to listen to what the Lord has to say to you in your heart and mind.
This type of prayer can be done kneeling, sitting, standing, walking, or lying down. It can be done aloud verbally or silently in your mind. So, how you want to start “talking to God in prayer” is up to you. But it is also “on you.” These prayers ain’t going to pray themselves, and you’ll never get to experience the benefits of prayer unless you humble yourself and pray.
So, jump off the deep end and take your life in Christ to the next level. Keep walking and talking with God IN prayer, and don’t forget to listen as much as you speak.
