Today’s photo of a spectacular view of a glass-calm lake reflecting a bright sun and wispy, high-altitude clouds comes to us from Fred Dimmick. Fred shared this beautiful scene from a spot somewhere near his cabin home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, or wherever he was traveling back on April 5th, 2023. Fred’s photo reminds us of the quiet majesty that exists in the remote corners of God’s creation and invites us to go out to see some of it this weekend.
Well, it’s Friday, thank God. Although our big move to Glens Falls won’t allow me to go too far into remote areas this weekend, I will try to get a final walk down “Freedom Road” to say goodbye to our countryside home in Easton for good.
Speaking of leaving things behind for good, the other night at Celebrate Freedom, I shared my testimony about how God had moved me to repentance and used the continuous pain of my addiction to cause me to finally decide that I was “done” with my addiction to drugs and alcohol. I got saved in 2010, but still drank alcohol to the point of drunkenness until 2015. In those years, I suffered the “double-minded” life of a Christian who mistakenly thinks that his sinful habits are okay or that he’s powerless to be free of them. By 2015, I was thoroughly disgusted with my periodic drunkenness, and when Pastor Bob Costello began a Christian Recovery ministry at our local church, I knew it was for me. I was so sick and tired of being sick and tired that I finally went to the Lord for healing, and He was faithful to bring it. Ever since, I have tried to do my best to share the message of freedom in Christ to bring God’s healing grace to others.
Being “done” with my sin was the first thing I needed to cause me to change, but finding God’s grace was the power that I needed to free me from my addiction for good. Now, I seek to serve God’s kingdom wherever I can to let people know how much God loves them and how He gives them the power to live an entirely new life. I have big dreams to reach more people, but if sharing the message of freedom in Christ at my local church, through online discipleship courses, and through my blog and podcast are my only service for God’s kingdom, it’s the least I can do to thank the Lord and represent His kingdom.
Speaking of serving the Lord, I’m sharing a devotion from Charles Stanley today that challenges our definition of “serving God” and encourages us to bring His love to those around us.
Charles Stanley writes:
“What Can You Do for God?
The Lord works powerfully through our small acts of kindness. — Matthew 6:20-21
What does it mean to serve God? Many of us have a distorted idea of service—to the point that we overlook opportunities right in front of us. For example, we might think joining the mission field or preaching a sermon is the only way to have a real impact. Those things are important, but the truth is, serving the Lord usually involves what’s happening in our life on a daily basis.
Don’t underestimate what God is doing in your seemingly ordinary day, whether that involves volunteering in your community, loving a new neighbor, caring for someone in need, or offering a listening, compassionate ear. You may not think these are important work, but they most certainly are. What you say to people, how you treat others, and the way you handle adversity are like stored-up treasures—God uses these things to reveal Himself to the world. When you live righteously, love those around you, and demonstrate kindness, compassion, and gentleness, you are bearing witness for Him (Matthew 5:16).
How is God serving His purpose through you? Before starting your day, say this prayer: “Lord, I choose Your way. Accomplish Your will in me, whatever that takes.” When you do, things will happen in your life that you never expected—God will bless you beyond all measure (Galatians 6:9).” — Charles Stanley
Amen. We can’t all be the pastor. The call to the mission field may not be ours, either. But that does not mean that we can’t serve God’s kingdom; there are other callings or jobs that we can do that will give God glory. There are other positions at the local church and opportunities to volunteer in our local communities that may be a part of our purpose in God’s kingdom. We were saved FOR good works, so we should seek out places where we can serve God’s kingdom.
However, we best serve God’s kingdom when we represent Him through our personal character and in our relationships. The best job we can take on as Christians is that of a disciple—someone who knows the Lord through faith in Jesus and who learns and applies God’s Word to his heart, mind, and body. A disciple loves the Lord and is transformed into a force empowered by the love of God.
Disciples seek to show others how God has transformed their lives and do their best to serve and love others as God would have them do. They speak of the goodness of God and the life that He brings through faith in Jesus. Disciples serve God’s kingdom by sharing and showing the love of God to others in the way they live, love, and serve.
So, let’s serve God’s kingdom by sharing the light of the gospel through our words and deeds. Let’s be a light that shines in the darkness, bringing our care, attention, and service to a world that so desperately needs the Lord.
