Who You Are in Christ — By M.T. Clark

Today’s Message on YouTube:

Today’s photo of bougainvillea flowers,  bursting in shades of coral, orange, pink, and magenta, against a white lattice fence and a bright Caribbean blue sky, comes to us from yours truly, as I captured these beautiful flowers just outside the Turks & Caicos National Museum during a shore excursion on December 29th, 2025.

TammyLyn and I landed on Turks & Caicos as part of our post-Christmas Caribbean cruise with David Jeremiah, which lasted from the day after Christmas through January 4th. The cruise provided an escape from the winter cold and a wonderful venue for celebrating the New Year and the fourth anniversary of our marriage on January 1st. Being able to travel around God’s creation is a gift, and I suggest you take advantage of it with the people you love.

Well, it’s Saturday, and speaking of the people we love, it’s Mother’s Day tomorrow, so make sure you honor the mothers in your life in some meaningful way. They are worth it.  As for me, I will be heading down to Hudson, NY, this afternoon to meet up with my dad, my brothers, and other members of my family to honor my mom, Kathy, with an early Mother’s Day celebration. God commands us to honor our parents in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:12), and when we obey, we are promised a long life.  So do what’s right according to the Lord and bless your mother this weekend.

Our obedience to God’s commandments demonstrates to ourselves and others that we really do believe in Jesus and that our identity in Christ is the most important thing about us.

We’ve been walking through a series called “Who You Are in Christ,” and over the past two weeks, we have knocked down nine lies — nine false identities that the enemy, the world, and our own wounded hearts try to place on us. We have seen that:

Nine lies. Nine times God says: That is not who you are. After nine days of teaching about who you are NOT, it is finally time to celebrate who you ARE in Christ.

So then — who ARE you?

You are a child of God.

Our faith in Jesus makes us God’s children.  When we believe, we become members of God’s royal family.

John 1:12 (ESV) tells us: “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,”

Not employees. Not subjects. Not distant admirers. Children. Our faith in Jesus gives us all the access, all the belonging, and all the inheritance that comes with that relationship with God, our Father.

You are chosen. We didn’t just decide to follow Jesus. God chose us.

Ephesians 1:4 (ESV) tells us that: “He chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.”

Before you did anything good or bad. Before your reputation existed. Before your wounds were inflicted or your mistakes were made. He looked across eternity and chose you — and that choice has never been revoked.

You are redeemed.

Ephesians 1:7 (ESV) tells us that:  “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,”

Our faith in Jesus is the conduit through which we receive God’s grace. Your past has been purchased and forgiven. The price has been paid. You are not what you did — because what you did has been covered by what He did.

You are free. Amen, who the Son sets free is free indeed (John 8:36).

Galatians 5:1 declares: “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Not freedom to do whatever you want — but freedom from the power of sin, freedom from the lies that have defined you, freedom from the weight of the past and the fear of the future. The Steps to Freedom in Christ that have been so formative in my own walk exist for one reason: because the freedom Jesus purchased on the cross is meant to be walked in, not just believed in.

You are more than a conqueror.

Romans 8:37 tells us: “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

This verse says that in all these things — the hard things, the painful things, the things that tried to define you by your worst moments — we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. We have overcome all things because of our faith in Jesus Christ.

You are sealed

Ephesians 1:13 (ESV) tells us that: “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,

Our faith in Jesus signed, sealed, and delivered us into God’s kingdom. Through the indwelling Holy Spirit, God has staked His own name on your future. You belong to Him, and nothing can change that.

And you are loved.

Romans 8:38-39 (ESV) closes the case: “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,  nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Not your past. Not your failures. Not your wounds. Not your weakness. Not your reputation or your comfort zone or your circumstances or your broken relationships. Nothing. Can separate you from His love.

That is who you are!  This is who you are in Christ, from when you first believed and forevermore.

Not the sum of your worst moments. Not the verdict of your hardest seasons. Not the label someone put on you, or the lie you believed about yourself for too long. You are a chosen, redeemed, forgiven, free, Spirit-sealed, more-than-conquering child of God — loved with a love that nothing in heaven or earth can touch.

Walk in the freedom, joy, and victory that come from knowing who you are in Christ today. Walk in it tomorrow, and on Monday. Walk in it for the rest of your life.

And keep on walking and talking with God.
