The Word in Your Mouth

 — By M.T. Clark — P-1995, 06/20/2026 — Today’s Audio Podcast

Today’s Message on YouTube:

Today’s photo of the warm light of a golden sunset breaking beneath a deep bank of clouds, over open farm country, a red barn resting against the tree line, and a wide meadow stretching out in the fading light comes to us from yours truly, as I captured this distant view of my former countryside home in Easton, NY, on October 18th, 2025.

Well, it’s Saturday, and I share this peaceful photo of an October sunset as a simple reminder to slow down this weekend and take in the goodness the Lord has placed all around you. The meadow, the barn, and the setting sun could have easily been ignored or taken for granted, but I kept my eyes open and found the beauty of my life in the present moment, and now, because I was focusing on what there was to be thankful for in my life, I can enjoy the memory of this view and share it. The way we can find contentment and joy in life is simply from wanting what we already have, and the way we can do that is to simply focus on the good of what is already there in our lives and to say something about them, like “Hey, look at that!”, to ourselves, to God, or to others.

The good things in our lives are simply there, a gift, for anyone willing to stop and notice. So, rest well this weekend, thank God for the beauty of the world He made and for your place in it, and say something about it.

Our series, “The Armor of God,” continues today as we go deeper into the sword of the Spirit — and what it means to carry the word of God not just in your hands but in your mouth.

The Word in Your Mouth

It is one thing to own a sword. It is another thing to know how to use it. The sword of the Spirit — the word of God — does the believer little good if we don’t use it. To benefit us, the word of God has to be taken up, known, and spoken.

The Lord gave Joshua a specific instruction about the word as he prepared to lead Israel into the greatest challenge of his life. In Joshua 1:8 (NKJV), God said:

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

Notice where the word of God is supposed to live: in your mouth. Not merely on the shelf, in the church building, or as a vague background influence on your life, the word is to be in your mouth where it is to be spoken, recited, and declared. The word is supposed to be kept so present in our lives that it should come out of us naturally, because it has gone so deeply into us through our meditations upon it.

This is the difference between owning the sword and wielding it. Many believers own the word of God. It sits on a nightstand or a shelf, respected but unused. The believer who wields the sword is the one in whose mouth the word lives — who can speak it in the moment of attack because it is already in him.

The Lord gives Joshua the method: meditate in it day and night. The word for meditate here does not mean to empty the mind as it has come to mean in so many false mystic philosophies and religions. To meditate means to mutter, to murmur, to speak it over and over to yourself until it sinks from your eyes into your mind and from your mind into your mouth and from your mouth into your life.

That’s the meditation practice for our sword. We see the word. We read the word. We think about the word. We say the word. And we repeat that process until we know the word, and we can repeat the word without having our Bibles in front of us.

The word that is meditated on becomes the word that is available. The word that is merely read once and set aside is the word that is gone when you reach for it.

This is exactly how Jesus used the sword in the wilderness. When the enemy came at Him, He did not pause to look something up. He did not reach for a scroll. The word was already in His mouth — “It is written” — because it was already in Him. He had meditated on it day and night, and so when the moment of attack came, the sword was already drawn. The word in His mouth was the weapon that drove the enemy back.

The believer who wants to wield the sword of the Spirit must do the same work. Put the word in your mouth. Read it until you can speak it. Meditate on it until it lives in you.

Memorize the passages that speak to your specific battles so that when the fiery dart, the lie, the temptation, or the accusation comes, the truth is already on your tongue, ready to be spoken to counterattack the enemy’s advance.

A sword in the sheath stops no attack. A sword in the hand, drawn and ready, is the weapon God designed it to be.

And notice the promise the Lord attaches: the one who keeps the word in his mouth and does what it says will make his way prosperous and have good success. The prosperity and success that are promised here don’t come because the word is a formula for worldly gain. They come because the life lived in alignment with the word of God is the life that the God who loves us, designed it to be, and He rewards us when we follow Him in His ways.

So put the word in your mouth. Keep it there. And when the battle comes, you will find the sword already drawn and ready to lead you in victory.

Keep on walking and talking with God.
