The Armor and Your Identity

Well, it’s Thursday, I share this pathway photo as a visual reminder and encouragement to get on or to stay on the path of Christian Discipleship. 

This week, I want to encourage you to spend some time over the weekend enjoying God as your Father. 

With the Hallmark holiday to honor our imperfect earthly fathers behind us, let’s take some time this weekend to honor our perfect Heavenly Father and to simply enjoy being His son or daughter through our faith in Jesus Christ. 

Our series, “The Armor of God,” continues today with a truth about who is wearing the armor in the first place.

The Armor and Your Identity

The armor of God is not generic equipment handed out to anonymous soldiers. It is the equipment of a specific kind of person, given to those whom God has already declared to be His own. 

Before we can wear the armor, we have to understand the identity of the one putting it on, because the armor only makes sense when it is worn by a person who knows who he is in Christ. 

Peter describes that identity in 1 Peter 2:9 (NKJV), where he writes that we are “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

Look at what God says you are. You are chosen, which means your place in His family is the result of His deliberate decision and not your accidental good fortune. 

You are a royal priesthood, which means you have direct access to God and a sacred purpose in representing Him. 

You are a holy nation, set apart for Him and no longer belonging to the world you came out of. 

You are His own special people, which means you belong to God in a way that nothing in heaven or on earth can undo. 

This is not who you are trying to become. This is who you already are in Christ.

This identity is the foundation that makes the armor effective, because every piece of the armor is an expression of who you already are rather than something you are striving to earn. 

The belt of truth holds you together because you are a child of the God of truth. 

The breastplate of righteousness guards your heart because Christ’s righteousness has already been credited to you. 

The helmet of salvation protects your mind because your salvation is already secured. 

When you put on the armor, you are not disguising yourself as someone stronger than you are. You are dressing in a way that matches who you actually are.

This is important because the enemy’s most effective attack is almost always an attack on identity. 

The enemy does not usually begin by tempting the believer to commit some obvious sin. He begins by whispering that the believer is not really chosen, not really holy, or not really God’s own. He works to convince you that the armor does not belong to you, that you are a fraud wearing equipment you have no right to carry. And a believer who has been talked out of his identity will eventually take off the armor, because no one keeps wearing armor he does not believe is his to wear.

This is why standing firm in the armor of God and standing firm in your identity in Christ are the same act. 

The soldier who knows he is a chosen, royal, holy, dearly loved child of God wears the armor with confidence because he knows it was made for him. 

The believer who has forgotten who he is becomes vulnerable at every point, not because the armor failed but because he stopped believing he had the right to wear it. 

Your identity is not separate from your armor. Your identity is the reason the armor fits.

So, when you put on the armor of God, remember WHOSE you are. 

You are chosen. You are royal. You are holy. You belong to God, and the armor you wear is the rightful equipment of a child of the King.
