Well, it’s Friday, thank God — and I share this photo of a restful look up at the sky as a reminder to lift your eyes to the heavens this weekend. The work week tends to pull our gaze downward to the tasks and the troubles right in front of us, but the Lord invites us to look up and remember that He is over all of it. Take a few minutes this weekend to rest, look up, and let Him remind you of His goodness. Have a blessed weekend with the people He has placed in your life.

Our series, “The Armor of God,” continues today with a truth about how often the armor needs to be put on.

Put It On Every Day

Putting on the armor of God is not a one-time event. It is a daily practice. The new believer would be foolish to think that he just has to put on the armor once at conversion and then walk protected for the rest of his life without another thought. While every child of God does have the Lord’s protection over His life in the eternal sense we still have to be wise and cautious with how we carry ourselves physically as we walk about the earth and we have to be on guard spiritually.  The informed believer on the path of Christian discipleship knows that the armor of God should be put on every single morning, because the battle is a daily one and the strength to fight it is given one day at a time.

The prophet Jeremiah understood this rhythm of daily provision, and he wrote about it in the middle of the most painful book in the Bible. In Lamentations 3:22-23 (NKJV), he writes, “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

Notice the timing of God’s mercy. His compassions are new every morning, which means they are delivered on a daily basis rather than handed out all at once. God does not give the believer a lifetime supply of grace on the first day and then send him off to manage it alone.

God gives fresh mercy each morning, sufficient for the day in front of him. The believer who tries to face today’s battle on yesterday’s grace will find himself running short, because the grace was never meant to be stockpiled. It was meant to be received fresh, through communion with God, every single day.

This is exactly how the armor of God works. The truth that helped you to stand firm yesterday needs to be taken up again today. The righteousness that guarded your heart this morning needs to be put on tomorrow morning. The faith that quenched the fiery darts last week needs to be lifted against the enemy’s attack this week, too. The armor does not stay on by itself, and the grace to wear it does not carry over automatically from one day to the next. Each morning, the believer wakes up to a new day, a new battle, and a fresh supply of the mercy he needs to stand in it.

There is great comfort in this daily rhythm, especially for the believer who is tired. You do not have to muster the strength for the whole war this morning. You only have to receive the grace for today.

You don’t have to figure out how you will keep standing for the next ten years. You only have to put on the armor for the next twenty-four hours, trusting that tomorrow morning the mercy will be new again. The God who gave you what you needed today will give you what you need tomorrow, because His faithfulness is not a one-time event but a daily delivery that has never failed to arrive.

So, make it a practice. Each morning, before the day pulls you into its demands, put on the armor of God again. Take up the truth, the righteousness, the peace, the faith, the salvation, and the word, and receive the fresh mercy that God has already prepared for the day ahead. The armor you wore yesterday served you well but today has its own battle and its own grace. Put it on again and walk into the day as one who is freshly equipped by a faithful God.
