Well, it’s Saturday, and I share this photo from a place of rest and extreme contentment this morning as I was surprised to discover that TammyLyn had worked diligently throughout the week to paint the walls and to install carpet in my office in our new home in Glens Falls, and I couldn’t feel more loved! 

We all need a place to call home, and TammyLyn has made one for us in our new house, but now she has helped to finish making me a quiet place where I can pray, write,  meet with clients, and talk to the Lord. 

So, take some time this weekend to thank God for the people in your life and to enjoy your life in the beauty of God’s creation or in the simple comforts of home. 

Our series, “The Armor of God,” ends its fourth week today by stepping back to see the whole armor worn together.

The Fully Armed Believer

We have spent weeks walking through the armor of God one piece at a time, and there is great value in understanding each piece on its own. But Paul never intended for the believer to wear the armor in pieces. He intended for the believer to wear all of it together because the armor was designed as a complete set, and the soldier who is missing even one piece of it is vulnerable at the point that remains unguarded. 

Paul lays out the whole picture in Ephesians 6:13-17 (NKJV), where he tells us to “take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

See how the pieces work together as one. 

• The belt of truth holds everything in place, so that the believer is anchored in what is real rather than being tossed by the enemy’s lies. 
• The breastplate of righteousness guards the heart, so that condemnation cannot reach the place where it does the most damage. 
• The shoes of the gospel of peace give stable footing, so that the believer stands firm when the ground beneath him shifts. 
• The shield of faith quenches the fiery darts, so that the sudden attacks of the enemy are stopped before they land. 
• The helmet of salvation protects the mind, so that the believer’s thinking stays anchored in the settled truth of who he is in Christ. 
• And the sword of the Spirit, the word of God, gives the believer the one weapon that does not merely defend but drives the enemy back.

The point Paul is making is that these pieces are not optional add-ons that the believer selects according to preference. They are a single set of armor, and each piece covers a vulnerability the others cannot reach. 

A believer who wears the belt of truth but neglects the shield of faith is anchored in reality but defenseless against the sudden dart. A believer who carries the sword but leaves off the helmet can fight on the offensive but remains exposed in his thinking. 

The enemy is patient, and he studies the believer for the one place the armor is not covering. The fully armed believer leaves him no opening.

This is why Paul says to take up the whole armor of God.  We aren’t just putting on the pieces that come naturally to us, or the ones that suit our temperament, or feel comfortable to wear.  We put on the whole armor of God, every piece, every day, so that there is no gap for the enemy to exploit and no vulnerability left uncovered. 

The believer who wears the complete armor of God is not invincible because of his own strength. He is fully protected because he wears everything that his victorious King provided for him to stand, exactly as it was designed to be worn.

So put it all on. Take up the truth, the righteousness, the peace, the faith, the salvation, and the word, and wear them together as the single set of armor they were always meant to be. 

The fully armed believer, standing in the strength of the Lord and covered by the equipment of his King, is exactly the kind of soldier who is able to stand firm in the evil day and to fulfill His purpose in Christ.
