Well, it’s Monday, and I share this painting of a hard-won homestead in the wilderness as a reminder that the people who came before us knew something about perseverance. The farm in this scene belonged to a man who used his home as a station on the Underground Railroad, helping others reach freedom at a real cost to himself. As we begin a new week and approach our nation’s Independence Day, it is worth remembering that freedom has always been precious, always been fought for, and always been worth the cost. Step into this week with gratitude for the freedom you have been given, especially if you know your freedom in Christ.
Our series, “The Armor of God,” enters its final week today, and we begin by looking at what the armor was always pointing toward.
More Than Conquerors
We have spent weeks learning to put on the armor of God so that we can stand against the attacks of the enemy. But Paul does not want the believer to think that standing firm is the highest goal of the Christian life.
There is something even greater than holding our ground, and Paul names it in one of the most triumphant statements in all of Scripture.
Romans 8:37 (NKJV) tells us, “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”
God’s word tells us that we are more than conquerors. Let’s ponder that phrase for a moment, because it is bigger than it first appears.
The word does not say that we barely survive. It does not say that we hang on by our fingernails until the battle finally ends. The word tells us that we are more than conquerors, which means we do not merely win the fight but win it so decisively that the very things meant to destroy us are turned into instruments of our good.
The believer in Christ does not just survive the attack. He comes out the other side stronger, more refined, and more deeply established in the love of God than he was before.
Notice the context in which this claim is made. In the verses just before this one, the Apostle Paul lists the things that come against the believer, and they are not small things. He names tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, and sword. These are the real hardships of real life.
These are the very circumstances that feel like they are sent to break us, but Paul’s declaration is that in the middle of all of them, not after they are over but while we are still in them, we are more than conquerors.
The victory is not waiting for us on the far side of the trouble. The victory is ours in the middle of it.
This is where the armor of God finds its ultimate purpose. We do not put the armor on merely to avoid being defeated. We put it on because we belong to a Savior who has already won, and who even turns the attacks of the enemy into occasions for our growth and His glory.
The fiery dart that was meant to destroy your faith becomes the occasion for your faith to grow stronger. The long battle that was meant to wear you down becomes the training ground where your endurance is forged.
The enemy intends his attacks for your destruction, but the God who loves you turns them into the very means of your becoming more than a conqueror.
And do not miss the source of this victory, because Paul is careful to name it. We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
The victory is not the product of our own strength, our own discipline, or our own cleverness in battle. It comes entirely from the love of God poured out for us in Christ.
We do not conquer in order to earn His love. We conquer because we are already held by it.
The love that saved us is the same love that carries us through every battle and brings us out the other side as more than conquerors.
So as you put on the armor this week, lift your eyes past mere survival. You are not fighting for the slim hope of making it through. You are fighting from the settled certainty that you are already more than a conqueror through the One who loved you and gave Himself for you.
So stand firm, wear the armor, and walk in the victory that God’s love has already won.
