Today’s photo of the sun breaking, soft and golden, through the clouds in a glowing evening sky over a wide green field and a tree line resting along the far edge of the meadow comes to us from yours truly, as I captured this view while walking along “Freedom Road” near our former home in Easton, NY, on June 22nd, 2024.

Well, it’s Tuesday, and I share this photo of a peaceful evening sky as a reminder that the Lord is the Creator of beauty, and He paints scenes like this one every single day, whether or not anyone stops to notice. The same God who takes such care with an ordinary evening sky takes even greater care with you. As you move through this week, slow down long enough to notice His handiwork, and let it remind you how closely He is paying attention to the details of your life.

Our series, “The Armor of God,” continues today with a truth that takes the weight of the battle off of your shoulders and places it where it belongs.

The Battle Belongs to the Lord

There is a moment in the Christian life when the believer realizes that the battle is bigger than he is. The armor is on, the fight is real, and the enemy is relentless, and somewhere in the middle of it the believer begins to feel the crushing weight of a war he was never strong enough to win on his own. That moment is not a crisis of faith. It is the doorway into one of the most freeing truths in all of Scripture.

In my life, that moment has come on a few occasions. At different times in my history with the Lord, I realized that I couldn’t win the battles that I face on my own, that my best efforts weren’t going to be enough. In order to find my victory over my various addictions, I had to give up the fight and surrender it to the Lord.

The people of Judah faced exactly this moment when three armies came against them at once, and God gave them a word through the prophet Jahaziel that still speaks to every believer in the middle of a battle. In 2 Chronicles 20:15 (NKJV), the word of the Lord came to them and said, “Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.”

The battle is not yours, but God’s. Stop and let the full weight of that settle in your mind and heart, because it changes everything about how the believer fights. The armor of God was never meant to make you strong enough to win the war by yourself. It was meant to position you to stand in a battle that belongs to the Lord. You are not the commanding general responsible for the outcome of the war. You are a soldier under the command of a God who has already guaranteed the victory, and the responsibility for winning the battle rests on His shoulders, not on yours.

This is a radically different way to fight than most believers have learned. Many of us approach spiritual warfare as though everything depends on our performance, as though the outcome of the battle hangs on whether we pray hard enough, resist long enough, or fight well enough. We carry the weight of the war as if its success or failure were ours to determine, and that weight slowly crushes us. But the word of the Lord to Judah lifts that weight entirely. The battle is not yours. It belongs to the God who is far stronger than the enemy poised against you, and He has taken full responsibility for the outcome.

Notice what God actually asked of Judah in the verses that follow. He did not ask them to fight with their own strength. He told them to take their positions, to stand firm, and to watch the deliverance He would accomplish on their behalf. Their job was to show up, to stand in faith, and to trust the Lord to do what only He could do. And when they did, God Himself fought for them so completely that they did not have to lift a sword. The victory was won by the Lord while His people stood in their positions and trusted Him.

This is the posture the armor of God is meant to produce. We stand firm, we hold our positions, we trust the One who fights for us, and we refuse to be afraid of an enemy who has already been defeated by a God who has already won.

The armor does not make you the hero of the battle. It positions you to stand in faith while the true Hero of the battle accomplishes the victory on your behalf.

So lay down the crushing weight of a war you were never meant to carry alone. Take your position, stand firm in the armor God provided, and remember that the battle was never yours to win. It belongs to the Lord, and He has never lost.

Keep on walking and talking with God.
