Your Story Is Not Finished

Well, it’s Monday, and I share this photo of a piece of art come to life as a reminder that we are God’s masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10 NLT), created for good works, and when we decide to seek the Lord’s will for our lives, our lives begin to look like the compelling piece of art the Lord intended them to be.  

Just like a painting or a famous piece of literature, when we decide to answer God’s call to action, our lives become a beautiful display of the contrast of the divine and the natural world as we become the instruments of the Master Artist to create something together that wasn’t possible with us on our own.   God helps us to accomplish the impossible, and He uses us to bring the light of His love to this world and gives purpose and meaning to our life’s story.  Speaking of our stories…

Your Story Is Not Finished

When we hit a hard ending in life, such as the loss of a job, the breaking of a relationship, or a season of suffering and loss, the temptation is to read the ending as the end, as if the latest closed door was the final word on our usefulness and our future.

David refused to read his life that way, and he gives us the reason in Psalm 138:8 (NKJV), where he declares: “The Lord will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever; do not forsake the works of Your hands.”

David doesn’t say he himself will perfect the things that concern him with his own effort and planning. He says the Lord will, resting the unfinished business of his life on the character and commitment of God rather than on his own ability to engineer a good outcome.

That little phrase, “that which concerns me,” is worth considering, because it encompasses all the things we worry about. Our areas of unfinished growth, our unmet needs, the difficult relationships we have, and the calling we’re not sure how to fulfil, all of it falls under “that which concerns me,”.  So what do we do with all that which concerns us?

Well, David hands all of his concerns to the Lord, who will perfect them. He then anchors the confidence of that decision in two unshakable things: the enduring mercy of God and the fact that we are the works of His hands. David knows that God doesn’t abandon what He has made, and His mercy doesn’t run out halfway through the story.

This is why an “ending” in the hands of God is so often a new beginning rather than a conclusion. The same God who began the good work in you is the God who will perfect that which concerns you. 

God isn’t the kind of writer who abandons a story in the second act. The endings we face in life are real, and some of them really hurt, but they aren’t the final page when our lives are in the hands of a God whose mercy endures forever. The job, the season, the chapter may close, but God, the Author of our story, keeps writing, often doing some of His best work in the very parts we assumed were the end.

So, if you’re standing at what feels like an ending today, don’t read it as the conclusion of your usefulness or your hope. The Lord will perfect that which concerns you.

Remember, God’s mercy endures forever; you are the work of His hands, and He doesn’t forsake what He has made. Your story is not finished, and the One who is writing it is moving all things together for good.
