Who Needs to Hear What God Did for You?

Well, it’s Tuesday, and I share this view from a few miles away from my place down by the river to encourage all of us to not take for granted where the Lord has placed us and to take advantage of the scenic beauty that is literally right outside our doors. This summer has been a particularly busy one for me as of late and I have had to be super intentional about enjoying the summer weather where I can.

I work in an office for the first time in 16 years and make a point of going out for a walk every day at lunch to get away from the office stress but also to appreciate the simplicity of life and the beauty of our world. I don’t take my phone. I just walk up Wards Lane and listen to the birds and wind and just focus on what’s immediately all around me. I intentionally look at the details of the trees, the grass, the sky, and the clouds and listen to the story they tell of how they move or stand still, all according to God’s will. 

I may walk out of the office with the weight of the problems I have dealt with in the morning, but they disappear as I simply settle into the larger story of God’s creation, happening all around me.   Speaking of stories….

Who Needs to Hear What God Did for You?

There is a demon-possessed man in the Gospel of Mark who was radically set free by Jesus. His demonic torment was so severe that no one could bind him, but Jesus cast the demons out and gave this man who lived among the tombs his freedom. When He was about to leave, the man begged Jesus to come along with Him.

We might expect Jesus to welcome such zeal and invite this man onto His team, but instead He gives him a different and more pointed assignment. Mark 5:19 (NKJV) tells us: “However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, ‘Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.’”

The first mission field of the newly freed man wasn’t somewhere far away. It was home, among the people who knew him before.

There is real wisdom in that assignment, because the people at home are the ones who saw you in your bondage, and so they’re the ones for whom your freedom is the most undeniable evidence of the goodness of God.

They knew the old you. They remember what you were like, and a transformed life among people who knew the person before the transformation is a sermon that no argument can deny.

Jesus doesn’t send the man off to strangers who would have to take his word for everything. He sends him to the very people best positioned to see that what God did was real, and He tells him simply to report what great things the Lord has done and how He has had compassion on him. That’s the whole assignment, “Tell your story”, and it’s a mission that any person who has been set free can carry out.

Notice also what the man is told to talk about.  He isn’t to tell of his own accomplishment or of a technique he used, he is told to tell of what the Lord did and the compassion the Lord showed.

Sharing your story doesn’t boast about your transformation as though you accomplished it yourself. Sharing your story testifies to the great things the Lord has done and the compassion He has had on you. We are to put the spotlight exactly where it belongs: on God the Father, Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Since getting saved in 2010 and progressively set free in Christ ever since, I’ve stood in parks, recovery rooms, schools, churches, and small groups and simply told people about what God did for me, and over and over the power wasn’t in the eloquence of my speech but in the plain report of God’s mercy on a man who didn’t deserve it.  Anyone who knows the Lord and His grace can do this.

So, ask yourself the question today: who needs to hear what God did for me?

It’s very likely that it’s someone close to you, someone in your own circle who knew the old you and would be amazed by how God has changed you.

You don’t need a stage, a title, or a polished presentation. You only need the willingness to go home, so to speak, and tell the people God has already placed around you what great things the Lord has done, and how He has had compassion on you.
