Developing in the Insignificant Places — Purity 1947

Today’s photo of a stunning, wide-angle view of Waite Road in Easton comes to us from yours truly. I captured this scene back on October 22, 2021. I called this one “Highway to Heaven” because of the way the road curves and descends into the valley under that massive, blue sky filled with bright, white cumulus clouds. The contrast between the dark, freshly turned soil of the fields and the vibrant green grass on the shoulder highlights the changing seasons. It’s a peaceful, expansive view that reminds us of the journey we are all on and the beauty that can be found right in our own backyard if we stop to look for it.

Well, it’s Saturday morning, and as you read this, our big move is officially underway! The time for waiting and planning is over; now is the time for action. We are hauling the remaining boxes and furniture from the countryside rental in Easton to the new house on Haskell Avenue in Glens Falls. Even in the middle of the heavy lifting, I’m trying to keep my eyes up and maintain a good perspective. Moves like this have a way of clearing out the old to make room for the new—not just in our physical spaces, but in our hearts as well.

This transition has me thinking about purpose and destination. Just like the curve of Waite Road leads the eye toward the horizon, the decisions we make in this life lead us toward our ultimate destination. We have to be sure we are moving toward the right goal and for the right reasons.

Speaking of following the Lord toward our true purpose, I’m sharing a devotion from Charles Stanley today that challenges us to consider what we are really living for.

Charles Stanley writes:

“What Is Your True Purpose?

1 Samuel 16:6-13

What do you live for each day? Basing our aspirations on “getting ahead” typically ends in disappointment. Maybe you’ve already achieved a goal of saving for the future or moving up the corporate ladder. And you might be giving to charity and volunteering at church but somehow still feel unfulfilled.

If so, there is a truth you need to hear: God gives each of us life for a reason—namely, to serve Him. Nobody finds inner peace without understanding this fact. Our society teaches us that pleasure, prosperity, and popularity will make us happy. But living in the service of self always leaves us empty.

Whatever we’ll become in this life, we are in the process of developing into that right now, one day at a time. Consider David: He was anointed king long before actually assuming the role of ruler (1 Sam. 16:12). He spent many years serving the purpose of God in insignificant places while developing into a great man. As his story shows, discovering God’s purpose for one’s life is the surest path to success.

Our Father’s purpose for us comes from His love, which is perfect. None of us can know the things He has in store for us, but we can trust His plan. Surrender to the Lord and say, “Not my will, but Yours be done” (Luke 22:42). — Charles Stanley

Amen. Discovering God’s purpose is indeed the only path to success that matters. Stanley’s observation about David—that he spent years developing in insignificant places—resonates deeply today. We might feel like our current season is “insignificant,” full of basic duties and physical labor like moving furniture, but God uses every moment to prepare us for what’s ahead. We get our strength and wisdom from living in the presence of God and living according to His wisdom and ways. Even in the middle of a stressful moving day, we can fulfill our purpose by treating others with kindness and handling adversity with integrity.

Our walk with the Lord is continuous and progressive, leading us from here to eternity. It’s not about finding happiness in pleasure or prosperity; it’s about finding fulfillment in His will. I’ve decided that my true purpose, whether I’m hauling boxes or coaching a client, is to serve Him.

If you are feeling unfulfilled today, despite your achievements, take a look at where you are placing your hopes. Are you serving yourself or the Sovereign King? Surrender your plans to Him.

Remember, our walk is about progress, not perfection. Every step taken in obedience is a good step. Trust His love, which is perfect, and say with conviction, “Not my will, but Yours be done.”
